I've been an active Arc Raiders player since January, AMA. Note I play passively/helping others, no I'm not exposed to a lot of PvP. As the game groups you with like minded players, generally.

Can you play just you and your friends? In other words private or is it always public?

As of right now, no. You are put into a public server instance with about 30 total players. Sadly, groups max out at 3 players. And 3 player group servers are generally much more PvP oriented. There are somewhat informal ways for friends to join as solo players and join the same map at the same time but you'll be scattered at your start points if that works.

Though they are planning on adding a totally pve server option as a test but I'm not sure if that's being added with the big update that's launching next week.

I had been waiting for Arc Raiders to drop to $20. Then Wardogs came along, and I gladly paid $40 for it.

$20 is def worth it. I think I have like 90 hours on it. I haven't played in months, but I would say 90 hours for $40 dollars when I got it was worth it. Will hop back in with the update.
