Regular price for this item tends to hover around $108-110 so not a huge discount.

Don't forget that NewEgg takes Paze payment, which has been running some $10 promos.

  • To have a somewhat portable GPU. This could be helpful if, for example, you have inexpensive PCs in multiple rooms. Having a moderate, portable GPU that can move around could make it easier to play games in the room that you want.
  • Provide a dGPU to mini PC or laptop that has little to no expansion options for things like this.
  • This uses its own power supply. If you've already got a system up and running, and have a spare PSU lying around, this avoids needing to buy a new PSU that can handle both the existing PC and the dGPU.
  • Connect multiple GPUs for AI work. 2 and 4 port OCuLink PCIe adapters aren't very expensive. Combine that with a x16 PCIe slot that supports bifurcation. Suddenly one desktop PCIe x16 slot supports 4 separate dGPUs.
  • Datacenter GPUs like NVIDIA Tesla P40's and P100's are large and don't include active cooling. Adding a shroud and a fan often makes them too large to fit into most PC cases. As an eGPU, you aren't constrained by the length of the GPU.
At $100, I'm not encouraging anyone to run out and buy this. But eGPU docks can be helpful for a home lab where you want flexibility.
