I've got a really old version. Close to 30 years old. Pieces didn't lock together back then. But just can't bring myself to spend money for the same, but better built version

The 6th edition is the best edition! They have trays for the resources, brighter artworks, larger pieces, easier to understand visual instructions, and better packaging.

Trays?? But I love chasing down and re-squaring all the resource cards every other turn!

I'm surprised there aren't more Catan knock-offs like there are with Monopoly. You can't copyright rules or game mechanics and Catan is from 1995, so patents long ago expired. The only IP protected on Catan is the artwork and name "Catan." It seems like anyone could make basically the same game with a slightly different theme and sell it for way less than $30.

$30 seems like about as cheap as a game like this could ever get. Even if you cloned the idea, you'd still have to manufacture tons of cardboard pieces, dice, cards, and other miscellaneous game components. After factoring in profit loss to distribution fees and business taxes, the margins can be pretty slim.

My wife is a board game fanatic, and has been since a child in the 1970s. We have about 95 different games. Anything new out there for just two players?
