The campaign story also isn't anything to write home about, so if you've played games with good campaigns or stories, this isn't going to be one of them.
If you've never played Skyrim, I suggest you invest some time into that. It's just an overall better game to enjoy. Even OG Cyberpunk with all of its flaws is still a better game than Starfield is right now.
I would probably recommend this game if it were under $20, somewhere in the $10-15 range is reasonable for what you get.
Community Reviews
Starfield is a Bethesda space RPG that lands best for players who want main story and faction quests, ship and base building, and a familiar Elder Scrolls or Fallout style loop. Mod support comes up as a major plus, with graphical mods and Star Wars conversions making the game feel more immersive and extending its appeal. The main knock is the exploration, which is often described as empty, lifeless, and more like disconnected zones than a true open world. The campaign also draws criticism for not being especially memorable, so it fits best if the core questing and mod scene matter more than roaming.
Common Questions (5)
The main story and side factions have a lot of crafted content, but random exploration outside that content is often described as empty, lifeless, and more like zones than a true open world. If you want constant discovery on planets, the game can feel dull after the first few landings.
Mods can make Starfield feel more immersive and are a major reason some players enjoy it more, especially if you approach it like a Bethesda game that improves with mod support. Star Wars-themed mods are specifically mentioned as a big draw, including Eclipse and Genesis, with Genesis requiring the Steam version.
Replay value is limited for some players, with one finishing it at launch and never replaying it, while others keep returning because faction quests, ship/base building, and mods add longevity. If you like Bethesda-style progression, it can hold up much longer.
The Premium Edition is being treated as a better buy around the mid-$20s, with one shopper waiting for it to drop to about $20 and another saying it would be reasonable under $20. At this price, it appeals most if you already have time in the base game and want the DLC.
It can be playable and enjoyable on a Z1E when paired with graphical mods. That setup was reported as working well for a full playthrough.

Playing Blood of the Dawnwalker now - that game is as refreshing today as Black Myth Wukong was a couple years ago.
It looks well done & is the only reason I was looking at the game
