Starfield is a Bethesda space RPG that lands best for players who want main story and faction quests, ship and base building, and a familiar Elder Scrolls or Fallout style loop. Mod support comes up as a major plus, with graphical mods and Star Wars conversions making the game feel more immersive and extending its appeal. The main knock is the exploration, which is often described as empty, lifeless, and more like disconnected zones than a true open world. The campaign also draws criticism for not being especially memorable, so it fits best if the core questing and mod scene matter more than roaming.

  • Starfield can feel more engaging after the first slow stretch once faction quests and story stakes rise.

  • Starfield's main story and side factions can provide substantial content beyond the random exploration complaints.

  • Starfield can become more enjoyable when graphical mods are used on a Z1E setup.

  • Starfield can offer long playtime when expectations include mod support for Bethesda-style progression.

  • Starfield can feel empty and lifeless, with dead spaces that do not feel worth exploring after initial runs.

  • Premium can feel overpriced for some players after completing the game once, with no replay motivation.

  • Premium can feel boring after around 25 hours due to limited planet exploration and mostly empty desert areas.

  • Starfield can be more like zones than true open-world landing, which can reduce the wow factor for exploration.

I was so stoked about this game that I pre-purchased the Premium edition of it. I put in about 25ish hours and I couldn't do anymore. I love RPGs and FPSs, so I pushed a little further to the point where it was just too boring to move on. It would have been better if you could land on a planet and be wowed, but you land on a desert that has no character. Just a dull dirt ball. So, you spend a lot of time running with nothing to do. If there were things to collect, some animals, anything other than just dirt, then it wouldn't be too bad. Also, it says it's open world, but I'm not too sure. I would say it's more like zones. It was just not for me.
Yeah I played it for free with Game Pass and found it boring. Lots of empty worlds.

Playing Blood of the Dawnwalker now - that game is as refreshing today as Black Myth Wukong was a couple years ago.

There was an awesome Star Wars mod for starfield called eclipse. Wonder how that went and if it's still around
There's a good one named Genesis [genesismodlist(dot)com] (not sure if eclipse was renamed or it's own distinct mod.

It looks well done & is the only reason I was looking at the game

The Star Wars Genesis mod might be the only reason to pick up the Steam version (required to play the mod). Genesis is still in development but it looks very promising as the sole reason to pick this game up.

This game is just as empty and lifeless as the reviewers say it is. They haven't fixed that. If you're going to play this, you really need to look into mods to try to make it feel somewhat more immersive. The game had so much potential for exploration, instead you're left with dead, empty spaces that don't feel worth exploring after you've done it once or twice.

The campaign story also isn't anything to write home about, so if you've played games with good campaigns or stories, this isn't going to be one of them.

If you've never played Skyrim, I suggest you invest some time into that. It's just an overall better game to enjoy. Even OG Cyberpunk with all of its flaws is still a better game than Starfield is right now.
I would probably recommend this game if it were under $20, somewhere in the $10-15 range is reasonable for what you get.
The game has a lot of content on main story and side factions. The complaints tend to be for the random exploration outside the crafted content.

This seals the decision for me, I love a good story, trash story and you might as well be playing minecraft hitting blocks for 40 hours. I think I will pass
FWIW for me it was pretty good. Check out NoSodiumStarfield on Reddit to get the views of those that enjoyed the game more and don't let the loud people in the room decide for them.

This game still feels overpriced after being released 3 years ago.
