We love Yoto! Each of our kids have their own mini. It's still one of the 12-year old's favorite things and part of her daily routine. Paired with affordable sales of mp3s from apps like libro.fm and you've got easy, portable, user friendly non-screen entertainment for kids of all ages.
This seems designed for very young kids. A 12-year old seems a bit old to not be laughed out of their "friends' group" when all the other friends have phones with screens...

I mean, you don't take this to school or social functions.

FWIW our 9, 11 and 12 yo use it all the time, but mostly at home. Depends on the kid I guess and their social circles.

I don't understand what this is. Is this an overpriced mp3 player?
Inspired by Fischer-Price, it looks like a gadget without any internet so it's "safe". I don't really get the cards and why it sticks half way out of the gadget, but I suppose you can buy YOTO cards pre-filled with music or books (not cheap either) or maybe there is a card you can put a custom playlist of music on for the kid -- not sure.
I mean for a very young kid I can see it but after about 10 years old, if you want a safe device for music, buy them a MP3 player with a real screen if you're holding back on a phone.

Would you mind giving me an idea on this of how they use it? Our kid has an alexa that reads to him, he has an ipad at school and he wants this SO bad. I really felt like it was designed for younger kids but its something he is BEGGING for on his xmas list. It is a big ticket item to be thrown to the side so he asked us to talk about it this week and I promised id do some more research and get back with him, and suggested he do the same. He is 8 but fully reads himself and I was not really understanding the function here.

Hey!! So we setup primarily create-your-own cards. Come to find out our library also has Yoto players now, so I gotta see what that means.
But really all the kids love the Yoto daily, the blutetooth if/when we let them use our phones, and the audiobooks and music we have on the MYO cards. I'm really quite pleased at how much the older kid(s) still like it. It's fun, it's personal, it's cute. You just probably wouldn't bring it to school, but for home it's a hit.
It's a great choice for bed time, a low engagement device that helps put their minds to rest.
