I got it to stitch holes in a few quality merino sweaters (damn moths) and it works great. It has fewer stitch patterns, but all the common ones for 98% of stitching. It's a must-have home item. And there are loads of YouTube's on this exact model so she will have an easy time learning how to use it.

Yes! Learning to use a sewing machine is fun and meditative. I personally got the xm2701, which is a bit easier to setup the bobbin (drop in and have blade cut the thread VS drop in, pull the thread, spin the knob once) , but I do wish I got a heavier duty model for heavier fabrics / piercing through multiple layers of denim.

You'll also need different needles for heavier fabrics. The weaker xm2701 machine can still work for multiple layers of fabrics, you'll just hear the machine struggle and may have to manually turn the knob at the difficult spots near a seam.

no not for starters, the bobbin mechanism is horrible on these HD models. If you are starting get the brother XM2701

This machine does not have all metal gears. If you are buying it to sew heavy fabrics continuously it won't last.

You should buy this for heavier fabrics. Nothing wrong with owning several sewing machines. I do have several sewing machines.
