Wheels and large fasteners 1/2 is better and you will need more than 100 ft lbs on heavy duty fasteners like bumpers and frames and suspesion on trucks.
Engine work is often 3/8 but aluminum and small fasteners you may need less than 20ft-lb this one specs down to.
Bicycles and small engines you want a 1/4 that is scaled in IN-LB (not Foot Pounds) or N-M.

Interesting (annecdotal) read on torque wrenchs and their accuracy based on cost/longevity use:

General lesson- get the cheap stuff it still works fine.

I have had their 1/2 in for 5 years and the 3/8 for almost 3 and they have been great with good accuracy for the work I do.

Community Reviews

Lexivon torque wrenches are presented as solid budget tools for DIY automotive work, with the 1 2 inch best for wheels, lug nuts, and suspension, the 3 8 inch fitting most engine and brake tasks, and the 1 4 inch aimed at smaller fasteners and bikes. Long term use and repeated jobs are described as holding up well, and the current pricing looks reasonable versus past purchases. The main cautions are that the click can be hard to feel on some units and the 15 step increments limit fine adjustment.

Bought the 3/8 Jan 2022 $33 but its the 10-80 ft/lb. The 1/2 i bought in August 2021 for $49 so not bad at current price (same ft/lb).
I bought the 1/2" in 2022 for $55 and it's cheaper today with a better-looking case.

Is the drive size or the max torque supported what makes the difference on what the wrench can be suitable for? If I get the larger one does it allow you to set it to something lower to cover all the use cases? This is one of those tools it feels like I should have handy but don't have an immediate use case for...
Max torque is usually the decisive factor on what you'll use it for. You can get adapters for sizes. And yes you can set it lower as needed in the range given in the title.

Totally concur with this. I own a Craftsman 1/2" and HF Pittsburgh for my 3/8" and 1/4" torque wrenches. My 1/4" is in my bike toolbox and rarely see usage, but my 3/8" and 1/2" see about equal amount of frequent usage.

Next time it's on sale, I'm really eyeing out the HF Icon split beam torque wrench.

3/8". Rarely do wheels need more than around 100 in a car. Very few items a backyard DIYer will do on a car are more than that, and doubly highly unlikely as a beginner DIYer. Pickup trucks are where you start to see 140-175, and even then a minority of.
If you ever do any suspension work, you'll be thankful for a 1/2" merely for the extra length and leverage of the bar even if your 3/8" reaches the same specs of the bolts. Generally my 3/8" works under the hood unless it's the crank pulley and almost anything underneath the car + wheels will almost always use the 1/2".

Which size should I use if I want to start working on basic car stuff, like torquing down my wheels after installing a wheel lock?
For wheels and suspension, get 1/2". For brakes, and assorted under the good stuff, get 3/8". Having said that, I would stay away from this brand. I recently bought a 1/4" wrench from them. It never clicks at all. I ended up stripping the threads on the engine, from the oil pan bolts. There are lots of reviews citing the same results.

I would still recommend 1/2" for wheels and suspension parts just because it's longer, and therefore takes less strength to use, especially when you're in an awkward position under the car.

Good brand, have the triple squares, the lug nut set and the 1/2 torque they've held up, good as sunnex in my book.

bough one of these in the past as I need a lower torque one...it's mostly garbage. Definitely wouldn't buy again, the torque warning "click" is barely noticeable.

A beam torque wrench is the most stable and accurate (easy to recalibrate). No moving parts. Only beam deflection...strength of materials 101. I use a $10 USA made 1/2" Craftsman beam torque wrench to rebuild engines and install lug nuts. It's accurate from 10 to 120 ft-lbs (+/-1%) with dead weight. Use the shortest possible socket to minimize error at high torque.
