These Kasa EP10 smart plugs are compact 15 amp Wi Fi outlets that work well for lights, chargers, fans, pumps, and other general loads, with energy monitoring available on other Kasa models in the same ecosystem. The newer EP10 design has relatively recent firmware support, and the 2.4 gigahertz connection is a practical fit for low bandwidth home devices. Caveats include setup friction, occasional app and connection problems, and reports that scheduled on and off routines can stop working. The EP10 also lacks Matter support and has a weaker motor load rating than the older HS103 line, so it is best suited to simple switching tasks.

  • Homeowners automating lights, chargers, TVs, or fans, because the plugs handle normal loads reliably and the newer design still gets recent firmware updates.

  • People building a Kasa or Tapo smart-home setup, because these plugs fit that ecosystem and can show device energy use.

  • DIYers switching a small motor through a relay, because the 15A rating covers the load and the motor rating is clearer on the older alternative.

  • People who need dependable setup and app control on the first try, because 2.4GHz setup can be frustrating and the app can have connection issues.

  • People who need a plug to grip heavy wall-wart adapters securely, because the outlet can let two-prong plugs and bulky adapters fall out.

  • Anyone depending on scheduled hard reboots for hardware, because the scheduled off-and-on function can stop working.

  • Shoppers who want a plug with broad feature support and Matter compatibility, because this model lacks several features and does not support Matter.

I switched my smart plugs all to a mix of Tapo and Kasa products a few years ago. Both work reasonably well with the Tapo app but some older Kasa plugs still require the Kasa app to initially configure.I have not experienced any hardware failures or routines failing. However, you should be prepared with the shortcomings. 2.4ghz, sometimes frustrating to setup and they rarely receive firmware updates... If you can't easily get them working, it's probably best to return them and try a different product.
2.4ghz wifi is superior for most IoT. These take nearly zero bandwidth so your only wants are signal strength. 2.4ghz has superior penetration through obstacles.

These Kasa ones are terrible. Major connection and app issues. Just stick to the Amazon-branded ones.

Between those two, I'd buy the EP10P4 The EP10 is the newer design and TP-Link is still publishing relatively recent firmware for itHS103 is perfectly usable, but it's the older product line. One potentially important distinction: TP-Link explicitly rates the current HS103 for 1/6 HP motor loads, while the EP10 documentation only states 15 A / 1800 W resistive load. So my choice is:Normal lights, chargers, pumps controlled through another relay, TVs, fans, etc. → EP10P4.If you're directly switching a small motor → HS103P4 has the clearer motor rating.
The power needed for a 1/6 hp motor is way less than these are rated for.

If you value the ability to install Tasmota or ESPHome, try the Switchbot W1901400 instead, also $22 for a 4-pack.

The reflashing process does require a bit of software/network tinkering, but it's not difficult.
