Apple's 2026 Mac mini with M6, 24GB RAM, and 512GB SSD is being framed as a fast compact desktop that feels noticeably snappier than older M4 models and handles everyday work with ease. The hardware is praised as very stable under heavy use, even across multiple monitors, and the Costco price can stack with a $50 off $500 coupon. Main caveats are the 3 plus week lead time, non upgradable storage, and the fact that 24GB is not enough for local large language model work. It is a strong fit for general desktop use, but not for expandable storage or serious AI workloads.
People running everyday desktop apps and multiple monitors, because the machine stays snappy and stable under varied workloads.
Yes. The same price is available at Costco, and it comes with a longer return window and better customer service than Amazon. A $50 off $500 Costco coupon can also stack with it.
24GB is enough for basic everyday tasks, but it is not enough for running a local LLM comfortably. For that use, 48GB to 64GB is the practical target, especially for larger models.
24 gb is just standard for getting basic things done. It's just not enough to run a local llm. The lighter models produce too many errors.
48-64gb is the new normal, and APPLE GOUGES you for this!
With the edu discount, trade-in, and Apple card, the Apple Store is a better deal. For example, I traded in my M4 mini for $565 after running it day and night with Ollama. The hardware value is crazy, basically double the price considering I only paid $499 with the edu discount for mini. I do not know if definately worth it for you if you use; I am just saying it costs $5 for gas plus this, but my salary has not increased in that proportion.
Oh dang... I didn't know the trade-in value for old Mac minis was that high (repped)! I have an M4 and M3 (both purchased on edu deals for cheap) that I could take back to get some gift cards. Thanks!
What do you mean ? Are you implying we are buying for AI ?
AI offers, and the rapid build-out of data centers and other AI infrastructure have increased demand for memory and SSD chips beyond current production levels. Therefore, we are facing a supply shortage, which drives up the prices we all pay for our personal computers and other devices.
