This MSI Codex Z2 is being framed as a strong sub 1,000 dollar ready to use gaming PC, especially for 1080p play, with the RTX 5060 alone cited as worth about $500. The 1 TB SSD and upgradeable DDR5 memory add flexibility, and the long Walmart return window through January 31, 2027 lowers the risk. The main knocks are the 16 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM, which may feel tight for heavier modern games and future use. It looks like a solid value if you want a prebuilt with room to tinker.

  • PC gamers who plan to upgrade later, because the DDR5 platform and socket leave room to swap in more RAM or a faster CPU.

  • Buyers comparing new prebuilts under $1,000, because the bundle price is repeatedly described as strong value versus buying the parts separately.

  • 1080p gamers wanting a ready-to-play tower, because the RTX 5060 is a solid fit for that resolution and the price is strong for the hardware included.

  • Shoppers who want a low-risk starter PC, because the long return window gives time to test it before committing.

  • Heavy multitaskers or modded-game players, because 16GB RAM can be tight once Windows and demanding mods start using memory.

  • Linux desktop gamers who want SteamOS out of the box, because the system uses an Nvidia card and SteamOS currently needs Radeon support.

  • Players chasing high-end 1440p longevity, because the 8GB VRAM and low-end GPU tier can struggle with newer AAA and UE5-heavy games.

  • Productivity users needing integrated graphics for multi-monitor fallback, because the Ryzen 5 8400F has no integrated graphics.

Whose "definition of low end?"

Whose "sweet spot for value?"

I feel like you are projecting a whole lot here. Not to mention, you upgrade the card / CPU, sell the old one. Plenty of "value" there. I upgraded my 4060 a few months ago to a 5060, sold the 4060 for more than I paid for it, and also more than I paid for the 5060 for that matter. When that 5060 can't do 1440P anymore (card ain't missing a beat today!), I'll upgrade that as well. No value leaving your old stuff sitting around as a door stop. For the components, this is still a decent machine and isn't the 8400F's socket still active? Meaning there is plenty of upgrade room there too. DDR5, active CPU socket, plenty of room to upgrade the GPU when the need actually arises. But feel free to post a better deal, even a "bit more" which solves all those projected shortcomings.

FWIW, Cyberpunk 2077 min system requirements (still one of the hardest games to run) is literally a 1060. Heck, even "current AAA" games like Control Resonant and Star Wars: Zero Company claim to run on a 1070 and 1080, so you'd likely still do okay on an optimized 1060 machine since those minimum sys requirements tend to be based on the worst possible circumstances (and bloatware). Not everyone needs to spend 2-3K on a 1440P machine that is FuTuRe pRoOfEd (hardly "value" in that mindset) unless you plan to only buy a new PC every 3-4 years...but then buying in the current market would likely be a questionable choice at best.

PS, my 1060 comment was just a throw away statement (which stood up pretty well BTW). Please don't make that your new line in the sand moving forward since that wasn't the topic and never was.
Fair enough, I'm not saying this isn't a good find in the current market - and maybe I am projecting a bit since I upgrade rarely and expect my PC to last many years. This is probably the best sub $1k deal out there. It's just that there's no good value out there right now in the new PC market. The only meaningful jump would be a 5070 and the lowest I'm seeing for a new 5070 build is $1500.

And I'm not going cling to the 1060 comment, I get that it was a throw away statement. The only thing I will say is that a 1060 wont even load up Gears of War E-Day (current AAA game) and a 5060 would struggle to hold 60fps @ 1080p. New UE5 titles with nanite and mandatory RT are going to be very hard to run for lower end builds even on low settings.

It's just that it doesn't make sense upgrading anything in this build and a PS5 pro would perform better. The power supply is only 650w, the motherboard has weak power delivery/VRM and doesn't even support PBO, the GPU barely beats a 5 year old 3060Ti and only has 8gb of VRAM, The CPU is worst possible CPU on AM5 and trades blows with a 5 year old Ryzen 5600.

For anyone who is looking for a PC right now, I would recommend looking at the used PC market but I get that's not realistic for everyone.

I suspect the downvotes are because you're simply pointing out that the obvious- you'll get better value buying used vs new.
I don't think most people are spec-savvy enough to know how terrible value-wise the new pc market currently is and how a similarly priced builds from 3 years ago would perform better than this PC currently.

I wouldn't disagree but if that non-tech savvy person was buying a 3 year old used PC, they'd likely be painting themselves into a corner with a dead end CPU socket and DDR4 Ram. Even if they didn't get ripped off with all the fools on FB MP trying to sell 10 year old "gaming PC's" at $1000. I saw someone yesterday wanting $300 for a 2060. It was brand new and top of the line Wink Plus unless they lucked out on a 3080 or 4070, etc, the GPU would likely be no better than this but with who knows how many hours on it, perhaps with reckless overclocking, smoking, pet dander, etc. I hate to be the 'buy once, cry once' guy, but buying used stuff from strangers is quite the gamble unless you know enough to vet it.

There are better deals to be found, for sure, but the people who need to find them, wouldn't know if they tripped over it.

I'd agree to most / all for that except the PS5 Pro comment. To me they are different beasts. I am not saying one is better than the other for gaming, but the PC has far more uses and a life after it stops being a gaming PC. I could see someone having just having a gaming PC but owning a PS5 Pro is going to require most folks to still have a PC / laptop / etc. So you are shifting money for gaming, but still need to spend money to recoup the loss of function. Even $200 for a netbook could go towards a gaming PC. Not to mention, zero upgrade path for the PS5. And I'd also argue poor resell value once it is superseded by the next gen console. Also, the PC can play any darn PC game released in the last 3 decades, the PS5 is a fairly walled off garden you are going to pay dearly for each and every game. Again, different beasts.

Yeah, besides the issues with buying used hardware (having the seller do a 3dMark run, cleaning the PC, secure erase ssd, windows install, bios updates, driver installs, potential for non functioning hardware) most people would have a hard time even knowing what they were looking at when it comes to specs.

I definitely get that a new PC with a warranty is generally the way to go for most users.

If I was to give quick advice to someone looking in this price range, I would say to check FB marketplace for a PC with anything in the 4070 tier for GPU and any 7000 series AMD CPU at around $1k or lower. There's a ton of "top of the line" PCs you'll need to wade through but there's still potential to score a solid deal.

I agree, it's just weird seeing consoles having more hardware grunt than PCs at the ~$1k range before even considering the 13.7 of GDDR6 available for VRAM utilization and potential console game optimization.

I recently convinced my friend to go PC over PS5 pro but for his budget it was pretty difficult to find something worthwhile.

IMO, most of the people weighing a PC vs a console tend to be chasing buzzwords / specs like "4K." Not taking into account all of the other things a PC can do or the limits a console might have. For example, a budget minded PC gamer has access to endless amounts of free games via their Amazon Prime account, weekly free games from places like GOG and Epic, or nearly free games via bundles. Does the PS5 have that? Nope, and no disk drives so forget trolling the bargin bin at the pawn shop or GameStop.

Also recently I sold an ultra wide monitor on FB MP, the number of PS5 people who asked me if they could play their system with a 21:9 display. I was like....yeah it will work, but you won't be happy with the huge black bars or ungodly stretching. I don't recall the last PC game I booted up that didn't support a 34" ultra wide. Plus, I'm not locked into whatever graphics settings some random dev decreed to make the game run okay at 60hz. Maybe I want the world's longest 'draw distance' in a game over 'ultra' textures, or vs versa. Perhaps I want 120hz, 144hz, not 60? With a PC I get to make those trade offs. Not have some rando decide for me and 5,000,000 other people. Oh, and no paying for multiplayer on the PC.

But on the flip side, a PS5 works out of the box, little learning curve, etc.

Again, different beasts.

Bought one, they allow returns until Jan 31, 2027 so if no better BF deals then have something. I don't play modern AAA games.

I'm just flabbergasted that 8GB of VRAM is now considered good enough... we were about to move to 24GB as the standard with the Super line of the 5000 series...

It's good to see ready-to-use systems like these coming down in price. But I would probably wait to buy from a Costco or somewhere with a better warranty just in case the manufacturer doesn't want to replace parts at current prices.
