This MSI Codex Z2 is being framed as a strong sub 1,000 dollar ready to use gaming PC, especially for 1080p play, with the RTX 5060 alone cited as worth about $500. The 1 TB SSD and upgradeable DDR5 memory add flexibility, and the long Walmart return window through January 31, 2027 lowers the risk. The main knocks are the 16 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM, which may feel tight for heavier modern games and future use. It looks like a solid value if you want a prebuilt with room to tinker.

Common Questions (5)

  • For typical gaming and general use, 16GB is enough on this build, though 32GB is a common upgrade if you want more headroom. Heavy modding or other niche workloads are the main cases where more memory may matter.

  • Yes, it is positioned as a strong sub-$1,000 1080p gaming PC, with the RTX 5060 alone cited around $500 and the bundle price seen as strong value. The main caveat is that it is a low-end build for longevity, especially with 8GB VRAM and 16GB RAM.

  • Yes. The RAM can be added later, and the AM5 platform leaves room for future CPU and GPU upgrades, so it is not a dead-end system.

  • Walmart's return window for items sold by Walmart, including this PC, is extended to 1/31/2027. After that date, issues would most likely go through MSI RMA unless you bought an extended warranty.

  • No. The Ryzen 5 8400F is an "F" chip, so the system relies on the discrete RTX 5060 for display output.

Good machine and good price for 1080p gaming. Worth getting 32gb ram if u can afford.

For comparison, the Apple M6 chip in the Mac Mini is almost 3x faster on CPU benchmarks.

Windows 11 and the mandatory included spyware is quite resource intensive. That's why gamers are switching to Steam OS.
Switching to SteamOS on a full sized tower? At best that is a niche application for desktop PC.

FWIW, I love Steam OS, but I ain't throwing it on my desktop PC.

P.S. I have an older version of this same Codex line, mine is / was a i5-13400 + 4060 + 16GB of ram, upgraded a bit since then but mobo, case, cooling, PSU, SSD, are all still going strong after 3 years. Purchased for sub $400 from Walmart before BF 2023. How times have changed Wink

can't expect much from a low end rig.

unless theres something i like on black friday i think, i'm prob gonna wait til the 60 series nvidia cards come out an spend upwards of 2 grand on a upper mid ranger. something maybe with an x3d an 6070 ti or so, def want one that has 16gb of vram at the very least.

that way your pc isn't laughable trash struggling here an there an later on with no legs that you spent a grand on.

just my two cents.
"laughable trash?" "low end rig?"

You can still game on a 1060 and who do you think is laughing at you? LOL....

Except this is a current gen, new PC with a GPU that targets 1080p. It's the definition of low end and definitely not the sweet spot for value. You're far better off spending a bit more and having something that will have much better longevity and isn't hamstrung by non-upgradable VRAM.

Try playing current AAA games on a 1060 - you'll get like 10fps at the lowest possible settings. An 8400F is the lowest of the low with only 16MB of L3 cache (half the amount of all 7000/9000 chips including 7500F and 6x less than X3D chips). The 5060 is a brand new card that costs $450 that barely beats a 3060Ti and still only comes 8GB of VRAM 5 years later.

Wow I had no idea the M6 chip in the Mac Mini was so stout. I may have to look into one of those for my productivity work although I believe the Mini can only drive (3) monitors.

Not enough ram, 32GB is standard for gaming.
You won't be bottlenecked by 16GB on this build. Sure you could look for very niche cases (heavy modding on Skyrim etc.), but I wouldn't use the word "standard" in this case.

I think they're working on this. All these low GB machines... World is a mess.
You can use an alt distro like Bazzite that works pretty well.

Whose "definition of low end?"

Whose "sweet spot for value?"

I feel like you are projecting a whole lot here. Not to mention, you upgrade the card / CPU, sell the old one. Plenty of "value" there. I upgraded my 4060 a few months ago to a 5060, sold the 4060 for more than I paid for it, and also more than I paid for the 5060 for that matter. When that 5060 can't do 1440P anymore (card ain't missing a beat today!), I'll upgrade that as well. No value leaving your old stuff sitting around as a door stop. For the components, this is still a decent machine and isn't the 8400F's socket still active? Meaning there is plenty of upgrade room there too. DDR5, active CPU socket, plenty of room to upgrade the GPU when the need actually arises. But feel free to post a better deal, even a "bit more" which solves all those projected shortcomings.

FWIW, Cyberpunk 2077 min system requirements (still one of the hardest games to run) is literally a 1060. Heck, even "current AAA" games like Control Resonant and Star Wars: Zero Company claim to run on a 1070 and 1080, so you'd likely still do okay on an optimized 1060 machine since those minimum sys requirements tend to be based on the worst possible circumstances (and bloatware). Not everyone needs to spend 2-3K on a 1440P machine that is FuTuRe pRoOfEd (hardly "value" in that mindset) unless you plan to only buy a new PC every 3-4 years...but then buying in the current market would likely be a questionable choice at best.

PS, my 1060 comment was just a throw away statement (which stood up pretty well BTW). Please don't make that your new line in the sand moving forward since that wasn't the topic and never was.

I hope i don't regret passing on this. I want an intel GPU and i rather get 32GB than trying to mix and match.

This is the best deal i seen in quite a while, especially under 1k.

I'd highly recommend looking for used deals on FB marketplace over this in the current market.

I just picked up a prebuilt with a Ryzen 7700, 16GB DDR5 CL40 5600MHZ, 4070 Super, 1TB NVME, 750w Gold PSU MSI Aegis Z2 for $800 last week for my buddy who is getting into PC gaming this winter. I upgraded it with a 7600X3D I got for $150 off FB marketplace and plan on selling off the 7700 for $80-$100. At a net cost of $850-$870, that will perform much better and have much more longevity than this low end build.

EDIT: Everyone downvoting this enjoy paying more and leaving 50%+ performance on the table.
I suspect the downvotes are because you're simply pointing out that the obvious- you'll get better value buying used vs new.
