This open box Gigabyte RX 9070 XT is a fast 4K gaming card, but the big draw is tempered by concerns about its cooling and warranty coverage. The card has a history of running hot from thermal paste or pad issues, and some fixes only bring small temperature gains. Best Buy's return window gives some short term protection, and the card can be checked quickly with a stress test, but open box warranty handling may depend on the receipt details. It is a strong performer if the unit is healthy and the paperwork is clear.

Common Questions (5)

  • This model has reported heat problems tied to bad thermal paste application, and open-box units are considered riskier because the cooler may already have been handled. Some owners report normal temps, but others recommend checking temperatures immediately and being ready to return it if it runs hot.

  • Warranty coverage may depend on what the receipt or order confirmation says, and open-box purchases may not be honored by Gigabyte in some cases. Remaining manufacturer warranty may still apply, so checking the serial number and fine print before buying is important.

  • Repasting or replacing thermal pads can help, and some users also recommend PTM7950 or thermal putty plus an undervolt or power limit. The gains may be small on this cooler, and the repair adds cost and risk.

  • Use the 14-day return window to install the card, monitor temperatures, and run FurMark for about 30 minutes. That should reveal most overheating or stability problems quickly enough to return it if needed.

  • It can work, but the main bottleneck risk is at 1080p high-refresh gaming rather than at 1440p or 4K. A 7800X3D-class CPU is a safer baseline if you want to minimize CPU limits.

BestBuy is really good with the return policy. I think they have like a 6 month long return window for members, too. It didn't cost that much and also members get perks like early sale items every month and stuff. I didn't sign up because I don't shop at BestBuy that much. This seems to be a good chance to get a 9070xt below $700 with everything else going up like crazy.
60 days for plus and total. not sure if there are exclusions though.

You may have already confirmed, but double check if running this alongside the 5700x3D is viable. May be CPU bottlenecked pretty quickly. I know the x3D processors are solid, but I suspect 7800x3D and up would be the target baseline.
You're getting thumbs down because this card and most other cards in this tier and higher won't really see a huge bottle neck at the resolutions people use it for. Your cpu bottleneck will only come from 1080p at high frames and even then you'd need a monitor expensive enough to see the frames. I am using a 5500x3D and it performs well at 4K since at that point it's a gpu bottleneck and less about the cpu trying to feed you the frames. Even at 1440p you wouldn't see much of a bottle neck depending on how high the frames are. X3D users gotta know that this is for the 1% lows not really for chasing high frames

On another note. I have this GPU in a ITX cooler master case. It was when walmart had this cleared out for $550 a few months ago. It runs cool and quiet in my use case at 4K gaming. Haven't had issues with it yet but I do undervolt all my systems. Temps aren't as cool as the Powercolor Red Devil Spectral 9070XT I have, that hovers around 40-60 idle to load. The Gigabyte hovers 45-65. Still very nice considering formfactor and price difference.

People here worried about bad thermal paste in the card while I'm more worried about the GPU die and all the memory chips solder out of the card in this open box item 🫣

Great price but only concern would be whether the OEM warranty would apply to an open box purchase. Bit of a risk that you might have to eat the cost of a repair or new card in year 2 or 3 if you start to get artifacting or thermal issues.
I never had any issues. If you do, just invest in a cooler or reapply paste

Plenty of reasons why you'd need to RMA a gpu that don't involve replying thermal paste.

Excluding the fact that it's open boxed during a warranty claim is sketchy and risky on its own. If you don't want to assume the risk, then just don't buy it and hassle yourself down the line.
Open box items still carry their remaining manufacturer's warranty as far as I know. You should be able to check the serial to find when that started, or some go by the manufacture date.

Right to repair laws in the US have already prevented companies from voiding warranties for removing stickers. This may be a state by state issue but in my state it is covered. Damaging during repair is another story entirely.

I did my build about a month ago and brand new RX 9070XTs were $699 with 3yr warranty, 8pin power connector, and Honeywell PTM.

It is amazing how easy the corpos are moving the goalposts and consumers just accept it. So much Stockholm Syndrome.

GPU prices have been steadily rising, dating back to the early days of crypto mining, but what really shocked me was how fast flash prices skyrocketed in just over a year. Paying $200 for a 1TB m2 stick is absolutely bonkers.

It's a shame how much prices have gotten out of hand. I got the white version of this for $650+ tax new back in June of this year
