This Brother DCP-L2640DW is a compact black and white laser multifunction printer that stands out for low running costs and solid everyday printing. It handles PC and phone printing well, and wired Ethernet or the RJ45 LAN port can avoid the Wi Fi dropouts that appear on some Brother lasers. Toner compatibility is the main wrinkle, since firmware updates may push expensive Brother cartridges, though some units still accept cheap third party toner. A practical pick if you want a small workhorse and can manage the toner and network quirks.

Common Questions (4)

  • It can work with inexpensive third-party toner even after a firmware update, but some firmware versions may force Brother cartridges. The safest route is to avoid updating firmware if you want to preserve generic toner compatibility.

  • It can drop off Wi‑Fi and require an unplug/replug to reconnect. Running it by Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi has resolved the issue for some setups and stayed stable for months.

  • This model is wireless-only, while the older version has an Ethernet port. If you want a wired connection, you may need a different Brother model or a different setup.

  • Yes, it can print well from both a PC and a phone once connected. One setup used it as a personal printer over a wired connection and reported no issues.

I have owned a refurbished copier #2710 since January 2019. No problems. I HIGHLY SUGGEST to purchase the Brother cartridge, I always had trouble with off brand. Purchase only genuine! I purchased this toner, lasted two years. https://link.amazon/B0ixB5Jvb
I have owned several Brother printers. Save for a really old one that didn't seem to handle generic toners - or maybe generic toners weren't as good quality as nowadays - every Brother printer I've had accepted and worked well with generics. Our business has saved probably thousands of dollars.

Maybe the 2710 and onwards have new firmware or gimmicks that prevent generics from working as easily. If that's the case, I would recommend people avoid the newer printers because man the old ones are tanks that are dirt cheap to run.

If possible, connect it to your router or access point by ethernet. Had the same issue you're having with the wireless, and connecting it by ethernet solved them. Did this a couple of months ago and have zero issues since then.
Yeah. I have the older model that has an ethernet port. The other one is wireless only.

Yep, wired the sucker a few years ago for my personal printer. Works great to print from PC or phone. Have another one that's about 5 year old one that has NFC printing but it's finacky as it's not connected at all to any Internet and times out a lot. It's just used as copy machine mainly.

I bought mines refurbished at Staples with a deal posted here, maybe 10+ years ago and its still going strong.

Always wanted to get a color one with fax back then. I sure wished that I did because prices have skyrocketed.

I have a problem with both of my Brothers laser printers dropping from my wireless network after a while. Only unplugging the printers and plugging it back in will get it back on the network. It seems to be a common issue. Anyone else was able to resolve this?
I found that turning off the Deep Sleep option solved that problem on my HL-L2340D. The setting is in a hidden menu requiring an arcane series of button presses. You have to Google it. This printer (which I also own) fortunately has an RJ45 LAN port.
