Community Reviews
This Brother DCP-L2640DW is a compact black and white laser multifunction printer that stands out for low running costs and solid everyday printing. It handles PC and phone printing well, and wired Ethernet or the RJ45 LAN port can avoid the Wi Fi dropouts that appear on some Brother lasers. Toner compatibility is the main wrinkle, since firmware updates may push expensive Brother cartridges, though some units still accept cheap third party toner. A practical pick if you want a small workhorse and can manage the toner and network quirks.
The printer can accept generic toners and help reduce running costs for business use.
Wired Ethernet connectivity can prevent wireless dropouts that require power cycling.
The printer can keep working with inexpensive third-party toner even after a firmware update.
The printer supports printing from both a PC and a phone without the NFC timeout issues seen on older models.
Firmware updates may force use of Brother cartridges that are described as massively overpriced.
Brother devices may make knockoff or third-party toner harder to recognize.
Wireless connectivity can drop after a while, requiring unplug and replug to reconnect.
Some firmware compatibility questions remain unresolved for refurbs, including whether factory reset can revert to earlier toner-friendly firmware.

Maybe the 2710 and onwards have new firmware or gimmicks that prevent generics from working as easily. If that's the case, I would recommend people avoid the newer printers because man the old ones are tanks that are dirt cheap to run.
Always wanted to get a color one with fax back then. I sure wished that I did because prices have skyrocketed.
