Community Reviews
This refurbished Brother laser multifunction printer stands out as a compact black and white workhorse that prints reliably from a PC or phone and can be cheap to run with the right toner. Ethernet support is a major plus for avoiding Wi Fi dropouts, and the older Brother units are described as tanks. The main caution is firmware, since updates may block third party cartridges or make knockoff toner harder to recognize, though some setups still work with inexpensive toner after updates. A practical pick if wired networking and toner compatibility matter.
The printer can keep working with inexpensive third-party toner even after a firmware update.
Ethernet connectivity can prevent wireless dropouts that require unplugging and reconnecting.
The printer can support printing from both a PC and a phone without the finicky timeouts seen on some NFC models.
Disabling Deep Sleep can resolve sleep-related connectivity issues on a similar Brother model with an RJ45 LAN port.
Firmware updates may force use of Brother cartridges and make third-party toner less practical.
Newer Brother models may include firmware or other changes that reduce how easily generic toners work.
Brother devices can be difficult at recognizing knockoff or third-party toner cartridges.
Wireless connectivity can drop after a while, requiring power cycling to restore the network connection.

Maybe the 2710 and onwards have new firmware or gimmicks that prevent generics from working as easily. If that's the case, I would recommend people avoid the newer printers because man the old ones are tanks that are dirt cheap to run.
Always wanted to get a color one with fax back then. I sure wished that I did because prices have skyrocketed.
