I know. We've got our phones that can do all this. Why do we want a dedicated player?
One reason people go for devices like this one is for the experience of listening to music with no interruptions or distractions. No phone calls, no notifications, just a little break away from the world to enjoy some of your favorite tunes.
Another reason is battery anxiety. It's a real thing from some people. The ability to listen to music without worrying about running your phone battery down can bring peace of mind and absence of worry.
The third reason isn't really a factor at this price point, but higher end digital audio players have much better quality DACs and other components than are found in phones and the listening experience can be much better with the right source material.
Fosi is a respected Chinese audio brand and isn't fly by night. You could do a lot worse than this one if you're looking for something inexpensive.
I like these DAP's because I pop the sd card out, reload and unload music via Explorer, and move on. Phone stays in the pocket
Community Reviews
The Fosi Audio DAP Neo is a compact dedicated music player aimed at distraction free listening, with buttons, wired audio, and microSD based storage for offline music. It fits use cases like work, workouts, yard work, plane rides, and keeping a separate player in a car or gym bag, while also avoiding phone battery drain and notification interruptions. The comments also note support for M4A and Apple Lossless through the CS43198 DAC. The main cautions are that storage is card based rather than built in, the bundled card may be low end, Bluetooth uses a basic codec, and early firmware bugs are still a concern.
Commuters who want distraction-free music, because a dedicated player avoids calls, notifications, and phone battery drain.
People who keep a separate music library on microSD, because the card can be swapped and reloaded without filling phone storage.
Travelers taking long flights, because a pocket player can hold a large offline library without tying up a phone.
Gym and outdoor workout listeners, because a smaller player is easier to carry and less worrying around sweat, rain, and bumps.
Buyers expecting built-in storage, because the player runs from a microSD card and has no internal memory.
Listeners who want Bluetooth-first convenience, because the built-in Bluetooth is limited to the lowest codec and lacks higher-quality options like LDAC.
People who want a polished first-release device, because early firmware can still have bugs and missing features.
Shoppers who only need battery backup, because a power bank is cheaper and more useful day to day.

I picked one up as I want to get off my phone and would live an auto podcast upload.
Two, would like to see if any firmware mods appear. There are likely missing features and bugs that the OEM won't fix - but hackers will. I will wait a bit before committing.

i used to have tens of thousands of songs but between ripping everything, pirating, collecting album art, etc. it is just a waste of time and money

For my part, you will pry my Ipod classic with my 10,000 song library from my cold, dead, but well-musiced, ears.
I actually thought of another use case last night, even if it is a bit niche. Some people are allowed to listen to music at work, but the nature of their jobs forbid them to have cameras on their person.
As for you, I hope you managed to get that iPod before the prices skyrocketed.
They take your monthly subscription cost, divide it by who you watch/listen to and directly divide the money based on the percentage you watch/listen to each creator/artist.
If you only listen to one artist for one month, they will give 100% of your allocated money to said artist.
You are very mistaken.
