The Fosi Audio DAP Neo is a compact dedicated music player aimed at distraction free listening, with buttons, wired audio, and microSD based storage for offline music. It fits use cases like work, workouts, yard work, plane rides, and keeping a separate player in a car or gym bag, while also avoiding phone battery drain and notification interruptions. The comments also note support for M4A and Apple Lossless through the CS43198 DAC. The main cautions are that storage is card based rather than built in, the bundled card may be low end, Bluetooth uses a basic codec, and early firmware bugs are still a concern.

Is there any way to automatically load this with podcasts' RSS feeds on a daily basis?
This is a great question.

I picked one up as I want to get off my phone and would live an auto podcast upload.

I want to get this but two things are kind of holding me back. One, it's risky to buy anything on the first manufacturing run. They may have bugs they need to fix and it may take a few months.
Two, would like to see if any firmware mods appear. There are likely missing features and bugs that the OEM won't fix - but hackers will. I will wait a bit before committing.

The HiBy R1 with microsd card support + available alt firmwares is wild. Had an extra 512gb card and now I have a tiny music player with podcast and streaming radio. Hard to look at other options when expandable options exist.

Curious to see serious reviews on this. I saw it advertised somewhere else, it's intriguing but with what phones and apps offer nowadays, it's gotta be pretty robust or have something worthwhile to get me to use it.
I think its for people who might want to disconnect from the net. Its a growing trend.

This is not correct. They only make 1/3 of a cent (I think it's less than that) if you stream it for free. If you use a premium account (spotify, apple music, whatever) that is ad-free, they are paid out of your subscription costThey take your monthly subscription cost, divide it by who you watch/listen to and directly divide the money based on the percentage you watch/listen to each creator/artist.If you only listen to one artist for one month, they will give 100% of your allocated money to said artist.
That is pure myth about how they take your sub fee and divvy it out, not true at all. The rate per play is about right though, although that goes to whomever owns the rights and often includes middlemen between spotify and the artist, so an artist may not receive all of that 1/3rd a penny per play. They actually iterate most of it here, so you can read for yourself: https://artists.spotify.com/royalties-guide

I read through the comments on this thread and reset my old iPhone SE1 to become my de-facto iPod.

I also recommend the book Mood Machine.

I'm not sure I buy this reasoning in 2026. Listening to music on your phone uses almost no battery if you have the screen off and bluetooth headphones in.

i used to have tens of thousands of songs but between ripping everything, pirating, collecting album art, etc. it is just a waste of time and money
Mordern phones does not have 3.5mm stereo plug anymore. If you want to listen to 'music' and utilize any DAC such as CS43198, no bluetooth can give enough bandwidth.

ya, this "deal" makes me want to bring out my phone and make it a dedicated mp3 player. But I won't.

If anyone is interested in jumping on this, spend the extra 40 bucks for four times the storage.

I know. We've got our phones that can do all this. Why do we want a dedicated player?

One reason people go for devices like this one is for the experience of listening to music with no interruptions or distractions. No phone calls, no notifications, just a little break away from the world to enjoy some of your favorite tunes.

Another reason is battery anxiety. It's a real thing from some people. The ability to listen to music without worrying about running your phone battery down can bring peace of mind and absence of worry.

The third reason isn't really a factor at this price point, but higher end digital audio players have much better quality DACs and other components than are found in phones and the listening experience can be much better with the right source material.

Fosi is a respected Chinese audio brand and isn't fly by night. You could do a lot worse than this one if you're looking for something inexpensive.
Additional reasons for not using phone: if you are driving a vehicle, it is much safer and easier to use physical controls you know by heart and can operate without looking than it is to have to futz with a screen and touch in just the right place while on the right mode to skip a track, etc. And there are places that do not have cell reception or internet available (say, driving to a camp site, on a road trip, etc) and some of us still want to have choices of music.

For my part, you will pry my Ipod classic with my 10,000 song library from my cold, dead, but well-musiced, ears.

Oh, you are so right on all of it.

I actually thought of another use case last night, even if it is a bit niche. Some people are allowed to listen to music at work, but the nature of their jobs forbid them to have cameras on their person.

As for you, I hope you managed to get that iPod before the prices skyrocketed.

You are very mistaken.

You do realize you can set specific, location-based or time based Focus settings where you don't get those notifications, right?
I think you're missing the point of the comment. They were stating the pure simplicity of a dedicated music only player. No subscription, No setting for no interruption. Controlling exactly what is there.
