I know. We've got our phones that can do all this. Why do we want a dedicated player?
One reason people go for devices like this one is for the experience of listening to music with no interruptions or distractions. No phone calls, no notifications, just a little break away from the world to enjoy some of your favorite tunes.
Another reason is battery anxiety. It's a real thing from some people. The ability to listen to music without worrying about running your phone battery down can bring peace of mind and absence of worry.
The third reason isn't really a factor at this price point, but higher end digital audio players have much better quality DACs and other components than are found in phones and the listening experience can be much better with the right source material.
Fosi is a respected Chinese audio brand and isn't fly by night. You could do a lot worse than this one if you're looking for something inexpensive.
I like these DAP's because I pop the sd card out, reload and unload music via Explorer, and move on. Phone stays in the pocket

The Fosi Audio DAP Neo is a small dedicated music player built for distraction free listening, with tactile buttons, wired audio, and a pocketable form that fits work, yard work, travel, or leaving the phone behind. It also avoids phone battery drain and the hassle of loading large music libraries onto an iPhone, while the CS43198 DAC is noted as supporting Apple Lossless and M4A playback. The main catch is that storage is microSD based with no built in memory, and the bundled card may be less appealing than using your own larger trusted card. Bluetooth is also limited to the lowest codec, so it makes the most sense for wired listening and simple offline use.
Common Questions (4)
A dedicated player avoids calls, notifications, and phone battery drain, and it can be easier for FLAC libraries because iPhone storage and file transfer are inconvenient. It also works well for work, travel, yard work, or leaving music in a car or gym bag.
It has no built-in memory and runs from an SD/microSD card. The 16GB, 64GB, and bundle options are storage-card selections, so if you already own a card, the cheaper 16GB bundle is the better buy.
Yes, it can play M4A, and the CS43198 DAC used in the Neo can decode Apple Lossless ALAC. That makes it suitable for iTunes-ripped libraries that are stored in ALAC/M4A format.
Yes, the code works with the bundle as well. It also appears to apply across the 16GB and 64GB options, with one reported 64GB Galaxy combo price dropping to $153.

i used to have tens of thousands of songs but between ripping everything, pirating, collecting album art, etc. it is just a waste of time and money
Not to mention when you get a new phone you have to set them all up again.
But when I try to teach people how to do it themselves, even when they ask me to teach them, they quickly tune me out saying that's too much work.
These DAPs aren't practical for everyone, but there's a certain niche of people who these suit perfectly.

In 2026 there is simply no advantage to a DAP with the state of music streaming today
it's only going to get better as data becomes cheaper
if I pay for 10K songs, ($1 each) that's like 100 years of streaming

It doesn't make sense to you and that's fine. Not every item in the world makes sense for every person in the world. 🤷

Within its price range, the Fosi Neo is the only DAP that offers the "Click Wheel," the touch-sensitive control used on the iPod. The only digital audio player with a similar concept is the Shanling Q2, which costs US$259. However, the Q2's "Click Wheel" functions solely as a volume control, whereas the Neo's can be used to navigate menus.
