The Fosi Audio DAP Neo is a compact dedicated music player built for distraction free listening, long trips, work, yard work, and other times when leaving the phone behind makes sense. It offers tactile buttons, wired audio, Bluetooth, and support for formats like M4A and Apple Lossless, with the CS43198 DAC noted as compatible with ALAC. The main practical appeal is avoiding phone battery drain, notifications, and storage hassles, especially when loading music onto an SD card. The key caveat is that the player has no built in memory, so storage depends entirely on the microSD card included or already owned.

Common Questions (5)

  • A dedicated player avoids calls, notifications, and phone battery drain, which is useful for work, travel, yard work, or leaving it in a car or gym bag. It also keeps FLAC or other local music off your phone's storage and can be easier to manage by swapping an SD card.

  • It has no built-in memory and runs from an SD/microSD card. The 16GB bundle is only the better choice if you do not already have a card, since the storage option appears to be the included card rather than internal storage.

  • Yes, it can play M4A files, and the CS43198 DAC used in the Neo can decode Apple Lossless ALAC. That makes it suitable for iTunes-ripped libraries, not just FLAC.

  • If you already own a microSD card, the cheaper bundle makes more sense because the player itself has no memory. If you need storage, the extra cost may be better spent on a trusted 128GB or 256GB card, since the bundled card is likely the cheapest option and the documented limit is 256GB.

  • Yes, the code works with the bundle as well. It also appears to apply across the 16GB and 64GB options, with one reported 64GB Galaxy combo price dropping to $153.

If anyone is interested in jumping on this, spend the extra 40 bucks for four times the storage.

I know. We've got our phones that can do all this. Why do we want a dedicated player?

One reason people go for devices like this one is for the experience of listening to music with no interruptions or distractions. No phone calls, no notifications, just a little break away from the world to enjoy some of your favorite tunes.

Another reason is battery anxiety. It's a real thing from some people. The ability to listen to music without worrying about running your phone battery down can bring peace of mind and absence of worry.

The third reason isn't really a factor at this price point, but higher end digital audio players have much better quality DACs and other components than are found in phones and the listening experience can be much better with the right source material.

Fosi is a respected Chinese audio brand and isn't fly by night. You could do a lot worse than this one if you're looking for something inexpensive.
I'm not sure I buy this reasoning in 2026. Listening to music on your phone uses almost no battery if you have the screen off and bluetooth headphones in.

i used to have tens of thousands of songs but between ripping everything, pirating, collecting album art, etc. it is just a waste of time and money

And you do realize the average person does not care to learn how to do that, yes?

Not to mention when you get a new phone you have to set them all up again.
or hear me out. In the time it takes to buy this device, rip your songs, transfer them over, collect album art, etc. you can spend 5 minutes and learn how to do this.

I understand that and I know how to do all that stuff. I actually *do* all that stuff.

But when I try to teach people how to do it themselves, even when they ask me to teach them, they quickly tune me out saying that's too much work.

These DAPs aren't practical for everyone, but there's a certain niche of people who these suit perfectly.

And ripping music, collecting album art, pirating, etc. is not too much work?In 2026 there is simply no advantage to a DAP with the state of music streaming todayit's only going to get better as data becomes cheaperif I pay for 10K songs, ($1 each) that's like 100 years of streaming
Most don't rip their own music, though. They just buy off of BandCamp or wherever. Some get their music free by digging around the Internet.

It doesn't make sense to you and that's fine. Not every item in the world makes sense for every person in the world. 🤷

I'd suggest Fiio Shanling or HiBy if you value audio quality TBH.
Just going to put this out about Shanling. Note the price difference.

What about the "Click Wheel"? Do any DAPs other than the Fosi Neo offer it?

Within its price range, the Fosi Neo is the only DAP that offers the "Click Wheel," the touch-sensitive control used on the iPod. The only digital audio player with a similar concept is the Shanling Q2, which costs US$259. However, the Q2's "Click Wheel" functions solely as a volume control, whereas the Neo's can be used to navigate menus.

I ripped most of my CDs a long time ago to Apple Lossless. Will any of these players work with that since I think it's FLAC based?

I think there's a very real nostalgia factor for things like this that is missed when you go all in on the "just use your phone" argument. Also, for people looking to break the subscription cycle. Maybe you want to go back to directly supporting musicians you care enough about to actually shell out the 10bucks and buy their album rather than stream it. If you stop paying your monthly sub, you won't have any of that music anymore.

The Neo plays M4A (MPEG-4 Audio), which is Apple's digital audio container format.

This type of device is great for a long plane ride, I keep an old Sony NW-A45 with a 2TB micro SD card full of FLAC/DSD files handy for this purpose. I'm in the market for a newer one that is easier to navigate, has a faster processor and used USB C to charge.

Not all DAC chips that can decode mpeg4 audio aac files can also decode Apple Lossless alac encoded m4a files. I looked up the CS43198 DAC specs and it can.

I think there's a price issue because I was able to get the Galaxy 64gb combo for $153:

Fosi Audio DAP Neo Modern Classic MP3 Player Galaxy Combo / 64GB
Discount code: EBDAP15 (-$26.99)
Original price: $179.99
Discounted price: $153.00

It seems to lock in the price between the 16gb & 64gb models. We'll see how this goes.
