I know. We've got our phones that can do all this. Why do we want a dedicated player?
One reason people go for devices like this one is for the experience of listening to music with no interruptions or distractions. No phone calls, no notifications, just a little break away from the world to enjoy some of your favorite tunes.
Another reason is battery anxiety. It's a real thing from some people. The ability to listen to music without worrying about running your phone battery down can bring peace of mind and absence of worry.
The third reason isn't really a factor at this price point, but higher end digital audio players have much better quality DACs and other components than are found in phones and the listening experience can be much better with the right source material.
Fosi is a respected Chinese audio brand and isn't fly by night. You could do a lot worse than this one if you're looking for something inexpensive.
I like these DAP's because I pop the sd card out, reload and unload music via Explorer, and move on. Phone stays in the pocket
Community Reviews
The Fosi Audio DAP Neo is a small dedicated music player built for distraction free listening, with tactile buttons, wired audio, and a pocketable form that fits work, yard work, travel, or leaving the phone behind. It also avoids phone battery drain and the hassle of loading large music libraries onto an iPhone, while the CS43198 DAC is noted as supporting Apple Lossless and M4A playback. The main catch is that storage is microSD based with no built in memory, and the bundled card may be less appealing than using your own larger trusted card. Bluetooth is also limited to the lowest codec, so it makes the most sense for wired listening and simple offline use.
The Neo can reduce phone notification and call interruptions during work listening.
The Neo supports M4A files, which can help when your library uses Apple's audio container format.
The CS43198 DAC in the Neo can decode Apple Lossless ALAC in addition to MPEG-4 AAC.
The Neo can support a dedicated SD-card workflow where the phone stays in the pocket.
The Neo's storage relies on microSD cards, so the included card quality may be a concern.
The Neo may not support Apple Lossless ALAC on every DAC, so compatibility depends on the specific hardware implementation.
The 16GB bundle value may be weak if the device has no built-in memory and you need to buy a larger trusted microSD card.
The Bluetooth experience may be limited by using the lowest possible Bluetooth codec without LDAC support.

Shame you can't buy it without any storage at all save a little more money.
If you stream your favorite artist using a premium subscription they are paid directly out of your subscription cost, not ad revenue.
This is also true with youtube premium. Rather than paying your favorite artist pennies from a free account, you are paying them dollars.
Apple music + Apple TV is only $5.99 a month or whatever and it's really easy to sign up for a student account
A typical new artist makes about $1.25 per cd sold.
So you'd have to stream the song fully 450 times before the artist makes more from streaming than a cd sale.
Well established / high selling artists may have different calculations, but they make more from concerts, merchandise, etc.
Anyway, I have built up my playlist for work, it's about 10 hours long and everyone enjoys the music. I can just leave the phone and not worry about notifications. I also got a free SIM card from Spectrum for the year, so I'm just using it to upload some of my videos at concerts on YouTube. There's a lot of great uses for a second phone, and the 512GB is terrific. I have over 120 days worth of music.
I tried a cheap MP3 player, but it didn't work well and I just gave up. I've had like 10 iPods and I'm just used to using iTunes. The older iPods I bought aren't really working, but I can always transfer the music if I ever really try, and can just leave it in the car.
