The Fosi Audio DAP Neo is a compact dedicated music player built for distraction free listening, long trips, work, yard work, and other times when leaving the phone behind makes sense. It offers tactile buttons, wired audio, Bluetooth, and support for formats like M4A and Apple Lossless, with the CS43198 DAC noted as compatible with ALAC. The main practical appeal is avoiding phone battery drain, notifications, and storage hassles, especially when loading music onto an SD card. The key caveat is that the player has no built in memory, so storage depends entirely on the microSD card included or already owned.

Tempted. I have a couple SanDisk Sansa players that are serving me well, but I'm worried about their age. I also have an iPod Nano, but the battery only lasts an hour or so. It is so nice to have an old school media player with buttons that I can press by feel. There are times I'm doing yard work or going near the water, and I don't want my flagship phone with me. Bluetooth is getting better, but it will never be as good as wired in regards to latency and quality.
I have had quite a few Sansa players and it's amazing that some of them are still working with decent battery time. I also had a Nana, but that gave up the ghost before the Sansa survivors. :-)

If anyone is interested in jumping on this, spend the extra 40 bucks for four times the storage. I know. We've got our phones that can do all this. Why do we want a dedicated player? One reason people go for devices like this one is for the experience of listening to music with no interruptions or distractions. No phone calls, no notifications, just a little break away from the world to enjoy some of your favorite tunes. Another reason is battery anxiety. It's a real thing from some people. The ability to listen to music without worrying about running your phone battery down can bring peace of mind and absence of worry. The third reason isn't really a factor at this price point, but higher end digital audio players have much better quality DACs and other components than are found in phones and the listening experience can be much better with the right source material. Fosi is a respected Chinese audio brand and isn't fly by night. You could do a lot worse than this one if you're looking for something inexpensive.
They make this somewhat unclear in the listing but the player has no memory. It runs on an sd card. You can see the slot in some pics of the silver model. The storage options do indicate you are selecting a card so if you already have one then buy the cheaper 16gb bundle.

Yes, I missed that. Another poster pointed that out to me. Mea culpa.

Shame you can't buy it without any storage at all save a little more money.

Streaming directly supports musicians. More than buying an album does. Buying an album is a one time fixed cost.

If you stream your favorite artist using a premium subscription they are paid directly out of your subscription cost, not ad revenue.

This is also true with youtube premium. Rather than paying your favorite artist pennies from a free account, you are paying them dollars.

Apple music + Apple TV is only $5.99 a month or whatever and it's really easy to sign up for a student account
A typical artist earns about a 1/3 of a cent on a stream (of the entire song).

A typical new artist makes about $1.25 per cd sold.

So you'd have to stream the song fully 450 times before the artist makes more from streaming than a cd sale.

Well established / high selling artists may have different calculations, but they make more from concerts, merchandise, etc.

I'm enjoying all the people trying to push this for the "nostalgia" and simplicity factors, as if they are going back to some distant land where things were so much more simple and better. Have I really gotten that old?

Lots of people talking about not wanting to use their phones. I bought an iPhone 11 Pro for the camera, because my Android phone was bad. I got the 512GB. I considered using it as my primary phone, but I ended up getting a Galaxy S22 Ultra with a fantastic camera. I've already had my thousands of songs on iTunes, but no longer have my playlists, because it hasn't transferred.

Anyway, I have built up my playlist for work, it's about 10 hours long and everyone enjoys the music. I can just leave the phone and not worry about notifications. I also got a free SIM card from Spectrum for the year, so I'm just using it to upload some of my videos at concerts on YouTube. There's a lot of great uses for a second phone, and the 512GB is terrific. I have over 120 days worth of music.

I tried a cheap MP3 player, but it didn't work well and I just gave up. I've had like 10 iPods and I'm just used to using iTunes. The older iPods I bought aren't really working, but I can always transfer the music if I ever really try, and can just leave it in the car.

How has no one mentinoned the difference in DACs between a phone and DAP? DAPs are made for music, phones are not.
Because the differences between DACs have been greatly exaggerated. Even cheap DACs now have specs that exceed the capabilities of human hearing. I have an Apple and several no name dongles for my phone to listen to wired earbuds and they sound the same. Several people have said the same thing in other posts. But there are also many people who lie to themselves about hearing a difference. I say all this as someone who owns three stand alone DACs.

What's the best bang for your buck DAP? The point up to diminishing returns. My budget is up to $250, but would much prefer <$200. I feel like I want to get this, but I would want something better a few months later. I also have some audiophile headphones, but realized that unless I'm AB-ing headphones directly, I can't remember how a different headphone sounds to be satisfied/dissatisfied with the current hp I'm listening to, so focusing too much on audio quality would be wasted on me.
