Those look like compostable bags.

OXO products are usually quite high quality in my experience so I could see using this item for a long time.

I have some OXO mixing bowls that I've used for around a decade, and OXO utensils that are going on 6+ years.

I'm new to the world of composting, but what are you supposed to do with stuff once it's full?
Do I need a compost bin for outdoors too? I live in the city, so I can't just throw it in the garden. I would attract every rodent

Yes, you would need a compost pile outside, to do the actual composting.

I've had this product for about 6 years now. I wouldn't say the MSRP $38 is outrageous, but like most OXO products (and I own/have own a bunch) it's more than I would want to pay. For $25 it's a good buy if you compost regularly.

I don't use bags, I have no idea why anyone would for compost (just put it in the composter and rinse it out?) but the actual bin is well designed, it doesn't stink even if it's been over a week and everything is fuzzy and breaking down (because it lets in air) it fully disassembles without any little parts to lose, the body is dishwasher safe though I just hit with some bleach and rinse it out. It's not like it needs to be really clean to hold onto compost waste.

I like that it's almost 2 gallons because that's about as much as I will put in there in a week before emptying it.

About the plastic concerns, it's made of polypropylene, which is a BPA free, chemically resistant, heat tolerant, and food safe plastic which is the same material reusable storage containers, yogurt and butter tubs, prescription medicine bottles, and the inside of aluminum cans and canned food cans are coated with, etc.

I'm not saying if you avoid plastics completely you're wrong to do so, but if you are trying to avoid plastic here and but don't otherwise avoid plastic food contact by not using a plastic cutting board (much worse than using a plastic composter), eating anything that comes in a plastic tub, aluminum can, or canned food, you are not changing anything in your life by using this tub for composting because all of those are polypropylene. And compostable bags, though I do not use them, are made out of inedible starches or cellulose that has been plasticized, not petrochemical plastics. They don't break down nearly as quickly as they like to say, but they're not "plastic" and do eventually decompose.

In my area they offer the green bin for yard waste and compost.

Do you live in an apartment? Maybe check to see if they participate in such a program.

I understand and I would like to add a thought or 2. lots of small changes done by a lot of people make a big change. I am not talking about the plastic put into the soil we'd make or how that soil ends up in food, I was thinking about manufacture of things made of plastic could be going down. this would be lovely if made of something else maybe. I don't know enough but if it were to be made of stainless steel might that be better and last for generations? I am guessing because I don't know about making it and all. This is the plastic age, like the iron age, bronze age and all of the historic ones. at this time plastic lasts forever. the only good thing about putting food waste into garbage dumps is that is what causes the decay that allows mount trashmore to break down so no matter where the food waste goes if will decay and decompose itself and other things near it.
I have 1 gallon jars for this and now I am going to put some air holes in the lids to see if it begins the decomp faster. I can learn. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but I put a lot of stuff from the huge jars I use into the blender and just dump that around the trees and plants and some on the lawn. after the first rain, it is gone into the soil. Maybe good, maybe not IDK. Coffee and egg shells and vegetables can't hurt the soil and animals are not attracted to it.

Unfortunately our city doesn't have a program like that. I do live in a home, so may need to also invest in an outdoor compost bin. If you have any recommend please lmk
