I find that kanuk Brand cases are the sweet spot. They're nicer than harbor freight, but slightly less robust than pelican. in my opinion, they have the best latches of all three and tend to sell at a price point between the two. That being said, pelican is still the gold standard for protecting high-end gear and for those who might have their luggage bashed around in travel
The Pelican 1170 is a compact hard case best known for sturdy protection and dependable build quality, especially for cameras, drones, and other high end gear. It is described as the gold standard compared with cheaper Harbor Freight Apache cases, with better robustness, pressure relief, and cleaner foam fit around the valve hardware. The main tradeoff is price, since similar cases can cost much less, and security is not the point because hinge pins can be removed and padlock alignment may be imperfect. A solid small case if protection matters more than bargain pricing.
Photographers packing compact cameras and accessories, because the foam inserts and rigid shell keep gear protected during travel and storage.
Apache 2800 lock hole alignment can fail to line up well enough for padlocks, which can indicate fit or manufacturing quality issues on that alternative.
The Apache 2800 has much larger interior dimensions than the Pelican 1170, with roughly 2.5x more interior space. The Apache is cheaper and less robust, while the Pelican is the sturdier choice for higher-value gear and travel abuse.
The hinge pins can reportedly be pulled out, even non-destructively, and the case can be opened again afterward. That makes it a poor choice if you need strong security for valuables, since padlocks alone may not stop access.
Pelican cases are preferred when automatic pressure relief matters; Harbor Freight cases are specifically called out as not suitable for that need. If pressure equalization is important for your use, the Pelican is the safer pick.

Horror Fright Ghouls makes a case similar to this -- the "APACHE 2800" which goes on sale frequently for $20.
"PELICAN 1170": Interior 10.5 x 6 x 3.2"
"APACHE 2800": Interior 11-7/8 in. x 9 in. x 5-5/16 in.
Now, HF's offering isn't as robust as the bird's case, but at half the price.....how much of a case do you really need?

I will say that as a huge pelican case lover, I do have a few harbor freight ones for some various stupid needs like something to keep my stuff dry on my kayak or my remotes dry on my porch. However, for anything important, I default to my pelican. But the biggest difference that any purchaser has to be aware of is if you need something to automatically relieve pressure, do not get a Harbor-freight case.

You mean the Canadian Nanuk. Most Nanuk and Pelican cases are more expensive than the stuff most people want to protect.

I have the APache 2800 and pelican 1200. The apache has an exposed screw for the air valve into the case. when I take layers of foam out for my cameras I have to foam around the screw. The pelican case the screw is not exposed. FYI

A reviewer posted a video where he used one hand to pull the hinges from the back of the case. He stated this is non-destructive, and someone can open the case and return the pins and no one would be the wiser. I guess it depends on what you use it for.

That must have been a fluke because I've had to replace wheels and latches and the pins are a huge pain in the ass to remove and needed a hammer and punch. Ultimately, security isn't the primary purpose of these and they can be pretty easy to open with tools.

Check the reviews on this first!!! There's a video showing you how easy it is to pop out the hinge pins and get inside even when padlocked. Pass on this if you're thinking about putting anything you want to keep in it.

Pelican cases are mostly made in the USA, which can matter for buyers who care about manufacturing location.
Pelican cases can keep screws from being exposed, which can simplify foam layer removal for camera storage.
Pelican cases can protect high-end gear and travel luggage when luggage gets bashed around during trips.
Pelican cases reportedly store FPV drones effectively, and buyers have used them for that purpose.
Pelican cases can be expensive compared with Harbor Freight alternatives, which may not fit budgets for protecting less critical items.
A Harbor Freight case may not automatically relieve pressure, so it can be a poor choice for users who need pressure relief.
Hinge pins can be popped out to access the case even when padlocked, which can be a serious concern for valuables security.
Apache 2800 lock hole alignment can fail to line up well enough for padlocks, which can indicate fit or manufacturing quality issues on that alternative.

Haven't had either Pelican or Apache fail me. I just wish Apache had some of the more niche cases & features.
