Have the Arc 5 and these are pretty good sounding open ear buds if you prefer the "hook" style buds.

Maybe you can explain...

What's the point of open earbuds that cover most of your ear canal?

Why not get normal earbuds and just use passthrough mode if you need to hear your surroundings?

I'm not Dave, but I've had the worst luck with getting in ears that sound decent, and stay in reliably.

But as for the openness on this kind of thing, the ones I do have rotate, so I spin them a bit to offer more or less blocking if someone is talking. At least for me they don't block enough that I can't tell what's going on around me in the house. I may not have heard what they said, but I know they were trying to talk, so I can pop them open or off to hear. Passthrough for me means I would either need it always on or know to toggle it. Passthrough often has terrible tolerance for wind so I never want it on when I'm outside or wearing a rain jacket as it amplifies that material sound dramatically.

The other reason I do like them is I had some water trapped in my ear awhile back and for a couple weeks any in ear hurt after a little bit, but open ears were fine.

That said, bone conducting works better for letting you hear around you. My shokz had just died and couldn't justify buying another expensive one that randomly stops after the 2 year mark.

It seems like the clip on style that doesn't block your ear canal would be the better move in the scenarios you describe.

No need to reposition them and risk them falling off and the "openness" is closer to a 70/30 split, where the earbuds are just background noise unless you crank them all the way up.

Shokz are good if you need something closer to a 90/10 split, but you have to be discerning about their models. Only about 2 of the models they've released are actually bone conduction and one of them has it gated behind an app setting.

From my experience with traditional earbuds with a hear-through mode, street noises and other sounds are fine but voices tend to get muffled. Open earbuds allow you to hear the world around you much better. My AirPods Pro 3 have a great hear-through mode but the Arch 5 and other brands of open earbuds are much better at it. Especially in a office environment where people are talking and you need to be aware of things around you.

-Pass-through mode gives external audio a metallic tinge, and is inconsistent on what it picks up. Some prioritize voices over other sounds.

-some may not want to completely fill their ear canal (for a variety of reasons)

Just some reasons. I've had open ear buds since the original Sony Linkbuds. There is no substitute for having your ears open to natural external noises.

Why some people want or need that is another question. Different products for different use cases

Any deal on ARC 5 gaming (include USB-C dongle)?

This drops latency down below 30 milliseconds, meaning sound effects are completely instantaneous. The ARC 4 Plus utilizes standard Bluetooth 5.4. Even with Snapdragon Sound and aptX Adaptive/Lossless, standard Bluetooth will still introduce a minor delay (usually 80ms to 150ms depending on the host device)

The ARC 5 Gaming features THX Spatial Audio equipped with a dedicated Game Mode profile. This works alongside 6-axis head-tracking to build a much wider 3D environment specifically tailored to track environmental audio. The ARC 4 Plus also has fantastic spatial immersion with Dolby Atmos and head-tracking, but its tuning is balanced strictly for music and cinematic streaming rather than directional gaming cues.

Like I said, the weird part is having the speaker nearly cover your ear anyway.

If you're going for open earbuds, it seems counterintuitive.

I think a lot of you haven't heard good passthrough either. Maybe just the crappy version the airpods come with? Because those sound like cheap hearing aids.

What are some examples of good passthrough?

I have these and I like them. They don't cover my ear canal to the point that they make it at all hard to hear what's around me. Use them in situations where I don't want total isolation, like the gym or out for a walk.

I Don't own this particular model, but I have a Shoks Open Fit. It doesn't impair my ability to hear at all. It just sits near my ear.

I have some Earfun Clip 2 also. They don't impede my normal hearing. My Sony Linkbuds sit in the ear and have a hole in the middle. It doesn't noticeably impact what I hear.

It's likely I haven't heard Earbuds with good Pass-through. The Sony Linkbuds Fit is ok.. The Samsung buds I have aren't great. But I also don't need to hunt for good Pass-through..
Don't need it with the open ears I have.
