Apparently this thing is a mess. Core complaints:
  • Chronic Connection Drops & Freezes: Users report frequent Wi-Fi disconnects and abrupt "No Internet" states. Network speeds often degrade to unusable levels, requiring constant manual power cycles that settings tweaks fail to resolve.
  • Unstable VPN Routing: On-router VPN features (WireGuard/OpenVPN) suffer from drops, high packet latency, and crashes, with users reporting the need to restart the VPN tunnel hourly.
  • Client Handling Bottlenecks: Despite AX3000-class hardware, real-world travel loads cause stability issues—users report the router struggling or failing to keep more than 3 simultaneous devices connected.
  • Captive Portal & Public Network Failures: A primary travel router feature—authenticating through hotel, cruise, and airport splash screens—frequently fails, preventing the router from establishing an upstream connection.
  • Ethernet & Port Negotiation Bugs: Ports experience spontaneous link-speed downgrades and unprompted reboots during sustained throughput.
  • Software Limitations & Thermal Instability: Reviewers highlight restrictive management controls in the Tether UI compared to OpenWrt alternatives, paired with device sensitivity to USB-C power delivery and thermal throttling during extended use.
  • Regression from Legacy Hardware: Multi-generation TP-Link users explicitly note that older models (such as the AC750 and AX1500) performed reliably, making this generation an operational downgrade out of the box.

I don't mean to put you on the spot, but is this review genuine or AI generated?

I have the AX1500 model and this is most likely just a consolidated list of what different users (with their different use cases) have experienced with the router, not a general one.For example, Chronic connection drops/Captive Portal failures: it may happen if you are using this to tap into a hotel/cruise line wifi which most of the time are very unreliable. It doesn't mean the router itself is acting up.Client handling bottlenecks: Most users, including me, connect more than 5 devices to this thing and I didn't have an issue with any of it dropping connection from the router.

What difference does it make? Regardless of who/what posts something, you should verify yourself.
The difference is that it looks like AI garbage and really isn't helpful for most people. I've been using the TL-WR1502X for the last year and it's been outstanding. The problem with router reviews and critiques is that people often don't know what they are doing and have unrealistic expectations.
