Aren't these types of brushes banned in the US due to hazard issues?

Lol naw. While using metal bristles does present a small risk of one breaking off, and you eating it, Its definitely not "banned". Hell, I still use my metal brush even though I also got a crappy plastic one, too. As long as you have a brain (and eyes) use metal brush and be extra cautious, use the sponge side and go over the metal afterwards to get rid of any and all leftover metal hairs.

After you experience having a loved one get one stuck in the back of their throat you'll realize all those risk mitigation steps you took aren't a 100 percent guarantee and the panic you'll experience trying to get it out of their mouth will be a lesson learned.

No outright ban, but over 15 million metal-wire bristle grill brushes have been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and manufacturers because loose bristles can break off, stick to food or grill, and be accidentally swallowed, causing severe internal injuries. There are safer options.

After seeing metal bristles break off on my grill grate, I steered hard away from metal bristle grill brushes. My favorite replacement has been a little spatula thing with chainmail around it. Works pretty darn good, I just wish it had a longer handle. That said, I pre-heat my grill, then spray it down with some water and hit it with the chainmail, it cleans the grates up very nicely.

This is the one I've been using:

Not the cheapest, but it has served me well thus far.

I am OK with using a metal bristle grill brush as long as I rinse the grill grate afterwards. My favorite grill cleaning tool is one with the curved piece at the end that matches the grill grate itself.

Dude, why go through all of that and still take the risk of potentially missing 1 bristle when there are plenty of options that are bristle-free?
