Do your homework! HP printers are inexpensive, but HP forces you to buy refills ONLY from HP. My wife bought an HP laser printer before they began forcing people to use only their cartridges. HP updated the software overnight to keep us from using other manufacturers' toner; we refuse to participate, so it's now officially a boat anchor. We couldn't give it away; we recycled it in perfect working order. What a waste!

Here's a start for your investigation: search "hp printer forced to buy HP toner" It ain't good, folks.

Thanks for posting this OP! We bought the "cousin printer" to this, HP Laserjet M209dw for my wife's parents close to a year ago mainly because they wanted a smaller printer that would fit into their office and they've been happy with it so far... but that was a special case where they needed/wanted a smaller laser printer.. the brother laser printers are bigger but known for lasting a long time ... my brother printer from ages ago lasted me close to 20 years before it finally gave up the ghost and had to be replaced. I've seen some slickdeals alerts on the brother printers (think the brother printer slickdeals are selling as refurbished whereupon this hp printer is brand new though) so worth keeping an eye out for those alerts as well.

Do not buy a printer from a company that forces you to buy their overpriced toner refills. There isn't a single printer HP makes - laser or ink - that's worth buying. The first time you have to a refill, you'll realize the "deal" was just to get you locked into an expensive subscription.

I will do a bit of quick math here. According to the Amazon AI tool: the included toner cartridge is rated for 1100 pages of black print. (5% coverage at 600x600 dpi)

A replacement HIGH YIELD toner cartridge is rated for 2400 pages at a price of $105. All together with this package you're running just over $215 (trying to account for taxes) in order to print 3,500 black and white pages. If including a cost per sheet of 1.5 cents, then the rough per-page cost to print using this device is 7.6 cents, or $0.076 the page... Less if you decide to print at a more conservative DPI rate.

I won't buy new HP printers any longer for exactly this reason. They provide a bit of savings early on, but gouge their users from overpriced toner for the life of the printers. Not a slick deal at all.
