How much of an upgrade is this over the old msi board that came with the 7700x microcenter bundles when everything was much cheaper?

It's not an upgrade at all. According to these specs, no USB4 or wifi 7. There was a X870E board posted a day or so ago at this price, which is an upgrade on paper, but honestly, unless you know you need something your current board lacks, there won't be any difference. Your CPU won't run any better.

Well depends on what motherboard you are actually using. But if we are talking about a cheaper am5 board like maybe a b650, this board would possibly have more nvme drive slots (tho makes sure you pay attention to bifurcation). And More USB ports. Features such as wifi7. maybe a faster ethernet port depending on what you have. Possibly better sound. It wouldnt be a performance upgrade. And better VRM would matter very little. Other quality of life features would be tool-less access to drives, Qleds to troubleshoot booting, and a Bios Flashback button, more argb and fan headers. but these things will need to be compared to your old board

Why you say no wifi7? it says wifi7 in description.

Im looking to upgrade from budget am4 i created 2 years ago, maybe i can wait a little for ddr5 RAM prices to come down.

sorry, my mistake. Wi-Fi 7 - if you need wifi on it, that's nice to have.

it might be worth buying a better AM4 chip ... like a 5800X3D and 5950X and getting a few more years out of it. Depending on who you listen too, RAM might not come down for a while.

Got it.
I have 5 5600x (and another build with 7 5700x), and heavy supply of DDR4 RAM, extra 64GB 3200 ram too. After doing a quick search it may not be great to upgrade to 5950x from here.
Happy with it, was wondering if things were getting better now as I can always sell my ddr4 ram for decent price too. Can easily spend few years with this, so maybe waiting is best option right now.
