These are handy to have just in case and our largely interchangeable but if you do buy one make sure, like this one, that it has an external power adapter to ensure trouble free use. 💜

FYI I bought an ORICO 3.5" HDD enclosure not too different from this one and it died after a year...the disk no longer shows up in This PC when plugged in.

Try another drive in the enclosure yet? Spinning drives don't last forever, especially outside the tower getting bumped around.

There was a known issue with Sabrent enclosures where it would format disks in a non-standard way if it was more than 2TB, making it unreadable by other enclosures or internal drives. I'm not sure if your drive has similar internals but you may have a similar situation. The disk is not damaged, but data on it may not be easily readable. You can reformat, but then you probably lose all your data, so I wouldn't do it without trying another Orico enclosure if possible.

Its more likely the power supply went out, these things are always right on the line.

oh shiet this makes sense. i have two orico enclosures, one of them i put a 4TB HDD. when i tired to put it in an different enclosure it said it was unreadable and had to be initialized. but when i put it back in the same enclosure that i took it out of, it worked fine. WEIRD.

Woot had these for $10 about a month ago. I worry about how cool these will run, Drives are way to expensive to loose to simple issues like heat..

Woot has not deliverd mine yet.. It says tomorrow.. I poopoo'ed it at first, but then thought the power supply and cables could be usefull if it runs as hot as I think it will..

Probably very useful provided you are wealthy enough to buy hard drives right now. LOL

The manufacturer does not list S.M.A.R.T. support for this model..
You need SMART to check the health, hours or how many times the HDD has been powered on.
Some folks care about this when using old or newly purchased used drives.

I cannot find my 4 TB RED drive I want to test in this enclosure. I picked up one last time but have not had time to try it. Wondering about picking up a second as I also have a wd black 4tb drive. I am still using the 14tb WD external drive, so i have plenty of time. This one seemed open, so would not retain the heat as much.

Are there equal or better enclosures for this price point?

Good call. Was going to purchase this until I saw it didn't support SMART.

FWIW, I have a bunch of HDDs that I need to know how many hours and health so I can sell and SMART testing is crucial for that.

You're probably right; I bought a new enclosure for the HDD and it still didn't work, so I followed up with the HDD seller for RMA
