How do people choose between Alligator and Cobra? Even the company itself doesn't seem to have any advice on why you'd choose one or the other.

Cobra (87 01 series)
  • Push-button quick adjustment, so you can resize it one-handed in seconds
  • Best all-rounder for plumbing, fittings, nuts, and round stock
  • Jaws are hardened and self-locking, and slim enough to get into tighter spots
  • The better pick for everyday use and for jobs where you change sizes often
Alligator (88 01 series)
  • Heavier, more aggressive jaw design for a strong bite on larger pipes and fittings
  • Opens wider, so it suits bigger diameters
  • Better when you need maximum grip on stubborn or oversized parts
  • Adjustment is less quick and convenient than the Cobra's

The adjustment for the alligators is not less quick or convenient. The alligators are far easier to adjust than cobra's. Alligators are easier to adjust one handed, they have less adjustment points so its quicker and easier to find the correct position. This myth that the cobra's are superior in every way is propelled by homeowners that think the button looks cool. On the job the alligators are superior for ease of use.

Thanks for posting this. I have the TwinGrips, and I can't believe how good the jaws are on that. I bought several sizes of Crescent/Gearwrench self-adjusting Cobra knock-offs from Menards when they were blowing them out 3 for $12 in store - while they have their uses - as you'd guess, they just don't bite or hold like the Knipex. Ordered and repped.

Why? They are different tools. Get both. You don't own just one screwdriver do you?

So easy to adjust that while you loosen something if you let go of the lower handle it adjusts for you to a different size. I have the alligators, for the cobras I went with a cheap clone that is 1/4 the price and just as good if you couldn't see the name brand. I actually use them more than the knippex alligators.

I have the Kobalt versions of these and have had no issues at all functionally other than the button sticking once in a while if I forget to spray a little silicone down occasionally. Of course that's for the much smaller versions for simple edc use.
