Great Value 100 percent pure pumpkin is a budget-friendly pantry staple for pies, muffins, oatmeal, and even straight-from-the-can snacking. The canned pumpkin gets praise for convenience and for working well in recipes, with a 12 pack called an even better value. It also comes up as a mild digestive aid for dogs. The main knocks are that it can taste less rich than Libbys and that the label raises questions about imported pumpkin. A practical pick when convenience and price matter most.

  • The pumpkin can work well for making pies and it delivers value for repeat baking.

  • The pumpkin can be used straight from the can frequently without needing extra prep steps.

  • The pumpkin can be mixed into oatmeal with cinnamon, peanut butter, and blueberries for a thick, flavorful bowl.

  • The pumpkin can be used as a convenient option when self-prepared pumpkin would take too much effort.

  • The pumpkin can taste significantly worse than Libby's in baking, including muffins.

  • The pumpkin can raise concerns because it is imported from China, which reduces comfort with the deal.

  • The pumpkin can be described as watery and filler-like compared with Libby's, with speculation about different pumpkin varieties.

  • The "100% pumpkin" label can legally cover a range of golden-fleshed sweet winter squashes rather than a single strict botanical type.

Interesting comments here. As a fan of pumpkin, I am genuinely curious about this brand vs. Libby.
Comparing Libby and what I roast out of Pie pumpkins from the store, there is z-e-r-o comparison. Libby tastes like watery dirt, and is pretty much garbage filler. Wonder if the actual species (?) variant of pumpkin that GV uses is different.
I often amp up the pumpkin, cut down the sugar, and grind fresh spices, for my pumpkin cheesecake, pies, lattes... I love the taste of actual pumpkin.

Baked pumpkin goods are so full of sugar and pumpkin spices that the actually source of the pumpkin probably doesn't matter to most people. I would highly doubt 99% of people can actually taste the difference between this stuff and organic, expensive stuff.
For most pumpkin "flavored" stuff, the pumpkin itself is just filler, an excuse to use pumpkin. that's why you can sub it for other squashes and not see much difference. Heck, sweet potato pie and pumpkin pie are basically identical (potato is a bit sweeter) because the vegetable is just a filler. What you're tasting is all the spices and sugar.

You're 100% right that self-prepared pumpkin will taste better but you also have to go through all that effort. Here you're paying for convenience and compromising on quality a bit.

Good info, thanks. I placed an order earlier today that included four cans. When I went to pick up the order, I almost went into the store to check the in-store price (just out of curiosity). That being said, most of the stores I've dealt with have been good about price matching the Walmart.com price (per restrictions), but I try to avoid dealing with that.

Did you know that even though most of these cans say "100% pure pumpkin", they are not REAL pumpkin but actually made from "Dickinson Squash". The more you know lol
Botanically there's not really a strict delineation between squash and pumpkin. Historically the term pumpkin was used interchangeably for a wide swath of winter squash.

As a result, In the US, the FDA allows a wide range of "golden-fleshed, sweet squash" to be labeled as "100% pumpkin"

there are many recipes to lower sugar content or bake with splenda or other sugar replacements. You must be a lot of fun at the dessert table at the holidays! Big Grin
I'm the only non-diabetic in a family of five. I don't handle artificial sweetener well, so I have to pick my battles. If I'm going to eat sweets, give me some ice cream or a cannoli.

All I know is my girl makes me these pumpkin chocolate chip muffins that are damn good. I always pick up Libby's ...but one time Walmart subbed with Great Value brand...and I'm tellin you the muffins weren't as good as usual. That's all I really know do with that what you will.
