This was my starter weapon when I spawned in.

You can buy one, but you're better off saving your gold for enchantments on better gear when you level up.

Any recommendations for a better one that won't break the bank?

It's a great brand, I own many of their knives. However, I'm not sure the purpose of such a tiny fixed blade. For whatever purpose you'd use this knife for, there's no reason a pocket knife wouldn't do the job as well, much more conveniently. This could be a great knife to hang around your neck during some sketchy walks home at night, I suppose, or in your boot -- If you're willing to walk a fine line regarding your cities local knife laws. But I wouldn't want this in an actual self defense situation, you can only grip it with like 3 fingers. This is something I'd keep mounted on a hiking backpacks shoulder strap so I'm not having to carry a pocket knife. Maybe an actual knife expert can chime in, but this may just be a novelty knife that's meant to be a cute gimmick -- much like Lodge makes tiny cast iron pans with no actual use.

I have some cheap knives (kershaw, Crkt?, ka-bar). They're fine for around the house, but if I'm going into the field I'm bringing a bark river, ESEE or L.T. Wright. That's just my 2 cents. I really love ESEE for the price and lt wright for quality and utility.

And after I write that I think how silly I am for comparing $100 and $200 something knives to a $16 Chinese brand. Basically it depends on what you plan to use it for, how often, and how dire your circumstances could become if it fails.

8cr13MoV is a decent, basic stainless steel, that is a great value for its performance. Not too hard, so not too brittle, easy to sharpen but won't hold an edge forever, while being very corrosion resistant. For most knife users it performs just fine. Spyderco uses 8cr13MoV a lot in their Byrd line and other budget-conscious folders. I own numerous knives in this steel and it performs just fine if given a good heat treatment, which Cold Steel does.

A 3.25" blade is a good size and pretty popular for folding knives, but this is a full-tang fixed blade so you can use it for jobs that might stress the pivot of a folding knife. Cold Steel makes decent stuff and has a reputation for overbuilding knives to take abuse, but this is not one of their more premium knives. For EDC, I prefer a folder because they are easier to pocket carry, but if you need a fixed blade and like the style, then there is nothing wrong or cheap about this knife and it's build quality. It's a good deal consider the knife market, so I'm in for one.

(More unsolicited opinionSmilie No, knives are not good tools to carry for self defense. First, you have to know how to use one and close with your attacker to do so. Law enforcement and judges like to call this "engaging in mutual combat" and you can easily catch an assault with a deadly weapon charge. Second, few dedicated attackers out looking for prey are scared of knives, yet folks who have no idea how to use one think they can carry it "just in case" and waving it at an attacker will magically make them disappear. Don't fall for this kind of idiocy, just showing someone your knife (that you don't even really know how to use anway) to try to scare them is more likely get you a brandishing charge.

That said, if someone does get their hands on you, a knife you can manage to pull is a great "get off me" tool if you deliver inside pull cuts to the arms, legs or body of someone grappling you. And then when they let go you run away rather than sticking around to fight more.

A far better tool than a knife to carry for self-defense is pepper spray, if it's legal where you are, or a simple stick or cane, and wear a decent pair of running shoes. Guns are a whole other topic I'm not going to get into. Your objective if attacked isn't to close and defeat your opponent, but to create space and escape the attack. Both pepper spray or a cane/stick do a better job of that.

Here is a good list of knife laws by state. [akti.org] And the best way to stay safe is to use your head, be situationally aware, and not go stupid places at stupid times.
