Not for everyone but if you can get a used kindle from woot or resale and jailbreak it, it's a far better value as not much changes for eink devices across generations. Again a lot of things need to align for that:
- get a good condition kindle for cheap (for example I got a cheap kindle 11th gen signature edition 32gb for $70 from resale - came literally brand new condition)
- firmware should allow jailbreaking
- you got to have some knowledge and tech appetite to be able to do it. This website helps: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/

Of course YMMV

I read the comments and they are so-so on the device, but there are only 71 of them. This seems like it would be very convenient as my Kindle paperwhite just won't fit in my pocket, but this would. I was trying to find if anyone had taken their Kindle library (I have hundreds of books, etc. on mine) and moved the whole thing to this device. Maybe using Calibre somehow? I have to research this more before the deal ends.

Can always buy it to lock in pricing and decide to cancel before it ships. (Im skipping this due to the screen size and going with a used kindle)

I have this. Bought it off AliEx for $54 plus some in shipping. I also bought a cover for it.

The OG OS on it is... not great. But crosspoint OS is easy to flash and is amazing.

You're gonna have to add your own books to the SD card. Battery life is actually legit amazing.

I can recommend this over kindle for the form factor and general kindle tomfoolery

What is the benefit of jail breaking a kindle? I have a paperwhite and use it frequently with Libby and books I've been getting on humble bundle and haven't run into any issues or anything. I am familiar with Jailbreaking or rooting other devices and adding apps that aren't on the specific devices App Store. I read your link and I'm still trying to figure out what the benefit would be as I don't need a page turner or keyboard.

Some benefits:

- Read any format any source books
- You own the books permanently not leased from library or worst Amazon (who has control over them despite you paying)
- Install KOReader for native EPUB and many other formats support
- Custom fonts, nested collections, and screensavers
- Remove lockscreen ads
- Disable automatic firmware updates
- Wirelessly sync your library with Calibre
- Access the file system for third-party apps and games
- Local backups and protection against remote content removal

You can check this site and some YouTube videos as well for more info on this:

This reader is AWESOME. My only complaint is the lack of backlight, but you can remedy that with a flexible magsafe light. I read so much more than I used to instead of doomscrolling when idle. Get this, flash a custom firmware, and enjoy. Seriously, awesome device. I don't want the Pro even though they added a backlight, but they got rid of the USB-C port and physical buttons. If they'd just release a version exactly like this but with an added backlight, I'd buy it a nanosecond.

EDIT: It was just pointed out to me that this is a new version of the X4 WITHOUT the USB-C connector, and instead uses their stupid proprietary magnetic connector. Never mind on this then, it's stupid and I do not recommend it. Nothing like requiring a weird extra accessory that can get lost instead of just being able to plug any USB-C cable you have lying around. So epically stupid.

One big red flag for this item. It uses a PROPRIETARY magnetic charging cable. Not idea for travelling, as you need to drag along another cable, and if you lose it, you can't charge. I have the older X3 that I really like.

Thank you for the details, wireless synching with calibre would be awesome so would being able to keep the library books for longer then 2 weeks, I just keep wifi disable now after I borrow one if I can't finish it before it lapses. I am going to look more into this tonight. Not sure what firmware I'm on but hopefully I can still do it.

For me the biggest benefit is to own the books forever and read whenever you like without any wait and ads .. basically your deviceand books are your own not loaned 🙂

100% agree on all of this. First thing I did was change the OS (I went with crosspoint because it worked for me). Couple this with Calibre, and it's a solid, solid little reader. You can even sync wirelessly with Calibre with some tinkering. I've yet to add a book any other way.

It should be noted, this is NOT a Kindle. It's a pocket reader with an amazing battery life. You can even pop it on the back of your phone with a mag ring.

I've been very happy with my purchase. Also, the subreddit is a wealth of info: https://www.reddit.com/r/xteinkereader/

And https://www.readme.club/ is another great source of info, as well as tons of wallpapers.

Definitely check Aliexpress before pulling the trigger at Amazon. Got mine for under $50 there.
