These Straight Talk promo phones are mainly attractive for the low upfront price and the chance to use them on TracFone or other Verizon based service after activation. The same pricing appears on StraightTalk.com, and buying two phones can be cheaper. The main catch is the unlock policy, which now appears to require 12 months of paid active service for newer activations, with older 60 day unlock rules only applying to phones activated before the policy change. A software device lock may also limit Wi Fi and offline apps if service lapses, so the deal works best for buyers willing to keep service active.

  • Some Straight Talk devices may work with other carriers after meeting the unlock policy requirements.

  • Straight Talk pricing can match Walmart pricing, and a multi-phone deal may reduce the effective cost.

  • Straight Talk phones can be used on TracFone after activation, according to community reports.

  • A Moto G Stylus can work with TracFone when using a physical SIM.

  • Unlocking for carrier use requires meeting a paid active service eligibility window, which can be a year.

  • TracFone Verizon-value brands can apply a software device lock if active service lapses during the device lock period.

  • Rebranding after activation can be uncertain, and eSIM activation attempts may cause issues that require additional service time.

  • A device lock can restrict functionality such as Wi‑Fi and offline apps until service is restored.

That's what's written, and they didn't honor it even then. I have a locked phone I wasted time and energy on from last October that they refuse to honor.

A heads-up for people who are considering buying these phones, activating with one month of service then using the phones on WiFi as a media device or with GV Voice....

Tracfone (and probably other Verizon Value brands like Straight Talk, Total Wireles, etc) recently update their Terms & Conditions of Service with the following section:

Discounted Device Service Requirement: Tracfone devices are discounted exclusively for use with active Tracfone service. To maintain device functionality, you must purchase a plan, activate the device, and maintain active Tracfone service on the device for a total of 12 months of paid service, which need not be consecutive (the "Device Lock Period"). If the device is not activated, or if active service lapses or a valid Tracfone SIM is removed during the Device Lock Period, Tracfone may apply a software lock to the device ("Device Lock") after advance notice. The Device Lock will restrict use of the screen and device functionality, including Wi-Fi and offline apps, until active service is restored, and the device will typically unlock within minutes after service is restored. Once the Device Lock Period is complete, the Device Lock will no longer apply. Emergency 911 calling remains available from the lock screen at all times, and you may port your number to another provider at any time. Bypassing or tampering with the Device Lock constitutes a breach of these Terms.

In other words, if you don't keep the phone active until it's unlocked, TF can apply the new Device Lock (probably via software update) which will keep you from using the phone with WiFi and/or apps.

You can read the updated Terms & Conditions of Service here: https://www.tracfone.com/terms-and-conditions
Yep , not sure how useful these phones are if one is not maintaining the whole 12-month plan.

If u activated from last October, u probably only need one month left. Just rebrand to tracfone and get 1 month. Mine did messed up when i tried to do 1 esim tracfone and i had to do another 1 month but idid simcard and it finally unlocked. If u sat in the phone and didnt activate before the new policy change Jan 20 then ur SOL n need 1yr.

I paid for an extra month, didn't matter. 3+ hours wasted with CS getting nowhere. They claim two months isn't 60 days. I activated Oct 3+ months before new policy went in.

You have to sue Verizon in small claims court to get it. That's how Kansan handled it and he won the case. I wish there was an easier way but there's not. Don't waste anymore time with their customer support. Here's the blueprint [arstechnica.com] for how to proceed. Good luck.

Yeah, not gonna do that for a $100 phone.
