Crazy to see thumbs ups for this. Got the last gen base model for $750 the year it came out. This year people get excited for paying $400 more for a new processor and 256gb of extra storage... Gross

What's crazier is that it only gets thumbed up when a staff posts it, regardless of how repetitive it is, but gets thumbed down when someone else posts it: https://slickdeals.net/f/20186187-apple-macbook-air-13-m5-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-more-1149

Apple moved this model "up market" and replaced it with the neo as their budget line. You will probably never see a MacBook Air at that price again.

This is still a significant discount on current MSRP of the very newest model. Part of the issue of the base price is the cost of the newest nodes, but part is, of course, the RAMpocalypse, due to which we saw a $200 price hike. Within that context and given how much comparable Windows laptops in terms of both specifications and build quality cost, this feels bad but is not terrible--obviously not truly slick, but if you want or need this specific device right now, it is still a decent savings--though not, unfortunately, back at MSRP before the price hikes.

If we use pre-RAMpocalypse numbers to evaluate every single tech deal on here, probably 9 out of 10 should be thumbsed-down, and that's just not useful--even if a deal isn't incredible, which some people here seem to think is the only kind that matters or rates, SD members or readers should still know that it exists and at minimum represents an actual discount relative to current market prices, rather than e.g. relative to some made-up inflated number that was invented in order to merely make something look like a deal.

Getting thumbs-uped when staff posts the exact same deal after regular SDers, and thumbs-downed when anybody else posts, is more of a serious complaint about how this site seems to work, IMHO. Do not feel great about it.
