Even the 'better' ones like Strapino that did well in PFs review have several critical reviews of early failures and the retracting mechanism eventually failing so even the 'pay more for quality' logic doesn't apply with these. They are an awesome idea but make sure you have a set of the old school ones on hand at all times if and when these fail.
Community Reviews
Towmax retractable ratchet straps are mainly about speed and convenience, with the loose end winding back into the mechanism like a tape measure. They make quick work of tying down pickup loads, small furniture, and light trailer cargo, and the reel design feels well executed for frequent use. The tradeoff is that retractable straps add moving parts, so durability and failure under heavy load are real concerns, especially compared with heavier duty standard straps. The price looks fair for the convenience, but warranty and long term reliability matter here.
Common Questions (4)
They can be, because the retracting mechanism adds parts that may fail over time. They're best treated as a wear item and backed up with a traditional strap set if you rely on them often or for heavy loads.
It can be a solid buy at $43.99, but similar Rhino kits have sold for less during periodic sales and include a lifetime warranty. If warranty and brand reputation matter more than upfront price, Rhino may be the better value.
Yes. The retractable reel removes the loose end, so you can tighten and store the strap faster than with manual tie-downs. They're especially convenient for frequent use in a pickup bed or on a small trailer.
The set is listed at 600 lb safe working load per strap, or 2,400 lb total for the 4-pack. That is lower than some standard tie-down straps, which can be rated around 3,333 lb per strap.
