These are retractable, so you're paying for ease of use.

No, the $10 pack of straps at home Depot are not retractable but to be honest retractable straps just gives more to break on them

Fake deal. This is the normal price for 12' ones I bought on Amazon with more reviews.

I bought a 6ft retractable set back in 2025 and use them all the time. Much better than the manual ones.

As far as the price looks like a solid deal

I expect these would be fine for most people, but I'd be terrified to put these under severe load/close to failing tolerances. If these go, brother they're gonna g͚̗̺̖͉ͤͥ̏̒o̝̯͕̿͒͋͡.

What is the "retractable" part? Does that mean if slack develops, it pulls that in automatically?

Push the button/lever and they retract like a tape measure. Probably with about the same force. Then you use the lever to ratchet like normal ratcheting tie downs. There just isn't a loose end, it wraps up in the mechanism automatically.

Yes, that's why there must be multiple of these to tie down loads so if one breaks, the others hopefully stay put. Otherwise, I would just do old fashion knot. I don't have any such use, but for those who maybe in such business day to day, I would highly recommend do a knot as a backup to reduce any possible disaster on roads or elsewhere.
