Subscription is not necessary if you don't want some extra fonts and icons. It has been mentioned previously that it can work without it's proprietary app, using 3d party app.

2nd time purchasing this label maker. Works well; great value. Software app is ample and meets my BASIC needs to make NAME & DATE labels for items.

Also purchased CLEAR labels; for the printer (make sure to confirm the APP works for the size purchased). I found the CLEAR labels to be more fade resistant to Outdoor Use. No need to purchase propriety labels which is a plus!

This is correct. Much cheaper to operate per label versus a P-Touch Label Maker (TZ Size). Also comparable in performance to (M Size) labels which don't have the water/UV resistant coating.

I believe the buying cost and use is minimal, especially if you use non authentic labels. As for their durability, I don't have an opinion yet.

My only complaint with this thing is that it is difficult to change between rolls without them coming unwound. Otherwise, it's been great for my purposes.
