Hi... not a gamer. Thinking of getting this for my son. What makes this a "gaming" keyboard vs a regular keyboard? Does it somehow respond faster to keystrokes?

Is the "lights up with ... gameplay" thing actually useful? Or one of those "cool for a day or two, but won't ever use it again" things? (My son's gaming PC has fans that light up... but we turned that off after the first day.)

Thanks!

The lights do nothing, membrane is cheapest, like the free ones that came with your pc or your tv remote where buttons bottom out to register, mechanical keys trigger part way down and have better tactile feedback for subconscious level control, and as the patents ran out they've become cheap as well, not much more than this so no reason to buy this, but also the sky is the limit for this stuff, with new magnetic tech as well. I'm sure your kid will be fine with moderately priced mechanism to start, the reviews and recommendations for budget mechanicals are out there

My son who was a kick-butt gamer in HS used whatever keyboard we had. It didn't matter. Based on my average gaming abilities, I have sought equipment upgrades to move from mediocre to average. The correct equipment will make the experience better though correct is in the eye of the gamer. 1. To play, any KB will do. 2. For gaming KBs, Read reviews, especially the negative ones. 3. A backlit keyboard is helpful for gaming after hours, even if just one color. 3. Operating my name-brand backlit KB has had problems lately. Adding a wrist pad to keep fingers above keys. 4. If you watch gaming streamers on twitch, they usually list their gear on their page. I use this for hints. GLHF
