I have bought $10 units and $70 units - they're all kind of the same. Including a couple of cell phones that had that functionality in their cameras.
I would measure the exact same spot from the same distance (if no touch) or on the same spot, if contact, and probably 50% of the timeI will get measurements that are sometimes half a degree off, and sometimes 2 degrees off.
You kind of learn to "average" it out over 6-7 measurements when you're getting varying results.
Only fairly consistent results I have every gotten has been with old school under the arm mercury thermometers (you have to keep it on tight for like 3-5 mins), or rectal thermometer when dealing with babies.
So, yeah, go figure. I'm no authority on this, just have used a ton of thermometers over the years personally.

This type no contact thermometer will be the least accurate out of all. It depends on ambient temperature, placement, etc a lot more than other types. It's undoubtedly the most convenient and probably the best for babies and toddlers. But I've seen some weird readings across a few no contact thermometers measuring right after each other.
