Tapo's 4K outdoor pan and tilt solar camera stands out for cable free security with app based control, motion tracking, and a continuous recording mode that can keep working on solar power. The solar setup can be practical once fully charged and aimed well, and the battery can stay topped up through cloudy stretches. The main tradeoffs are power and ecosystem limits, since pan and tilt, frequent recording, and tracking drain more battery, and solar models do not support ONVIF or easy NAS and Blue Iris recording. It is a capable fit if you want flexible outdoor coverage without wiring.

yes, it does need good sun/light to charge fully. and yes it can take several days to fill up from 0. Completely normal since it also takes days to go to empty from a full charge. NOT an issue. Also depends on how much recording it does, how many events, etc.As far as connectivity that was probably your wireless router being crap than the camera. I have absolutely NO issues with sev eral of these same models on a mesh system w nodes.also, pan/tilt has nothing to do w your wireless. It sounds more like you had a dud.
A solar camera not charging from adequate sun IS an issue. That's the whole point of a solar camera, to charge with just 45 mins of sun as it claims. It charged back to full in 5 days with at least 8 hours of sun daily from battery at 35%, not from 0% as you claim.

My TP Link router is not crap as you claim. It handles all my other Tapo devices and wired and WiFi devices with no issues at all. I really like TP Link routers.

I may have had a dud, but I'm not going to replace it with another device to be disappointed again. I'll likely try a Tapo solar camera in another couple of years when they get the kinks out. Meanwhile, my other wired & battery Tapo cameras work beautifully.

nonsense. Placing the panel in the wrong spot is not their issue.
I've got several of this one, all been 100%

What is nonsense is after placing the solar camera in a location that gets at least an hour of sun (more than 45 mins a day) does not charge the camera adequately as they advertise. I placed it in a location that gets about 3-4 hours of direct, full sun a day and it would not keep up. I wasn't even using the 24/7 recording since the IR kept flashing on and off all night, and I didn't want the regular lights on all night which would drain it even more. It was set to only record with motion and didn't really do that well either honestly. If it needs 8 hours of sun daily to run properly, that's fine, it just doesn't work for my use case.

An hour of sun...LOL.
You clearly have no idea how this works. Go look up the battery capacity then look up the panel capacity.
Funny how it works perfectly here. START with a full battery. Mine have NEVER been empty since I installed it. and that's with plenty of cloudy days and even includes a massive pile of birdcrap sitting on it for weeks. It never stopped.

I have cheaper versions of this type of camera at around $40 that alert me and have good cloud for about $6 per month. Can someone please educate me what is the difference?

You obviously do not know how to read. As I said, I placed it in a location with 3-4 hours of sun. It's fine, it's clear that you know nothing about technology, mentioning battery capacity like you think you know what you're talking about. It's ok.

The instructions say to literally fully charge it before installing it in its location.

TP routers are crap? Not in my experience running a mesh one now.

The PIR on all cameras are pretty bad if you move square straight on toward the PIR it has a hard time detecting motion.

It has to be able to pull out your heat signature from the background behind it. That's easier to do when your heat signature moves across the camera's PIR.

You have to cut across the PIR, so one way is to mount the camera slightly on an angle to what you want to guard.

Setting this came up to not use the PIR is the way to go,snapshots about every 5 Seconds.

They make a model that's non tracking, that tracking is going to eat into the battery.

Best to not use it, but it allows you to repostion the camera's direction.

Where I live in a historic district that would be useful as I wouldn't use this camera as my main security cameras but as a backup and needing to temporarily watch a driveway, parked car on the street, or a entrance point.

Also if you think you're going to sit on the camera, camp and watch videos you need to get yourself a POE wired camera.

This camera has a niche purpose.

Also don't forget it records when the power is off, to an SD card, so if you got a business?

Does this solar battery cam do continuous recording? I've heard battery can only record when it detects something.
The PIR sensor will actually eat up more power.

PIR sensors have a problem detecting motion that moves square toward the PIR..

It can't pick out your heat signature from the environment behind because the environment behind isn't changing.

It's when you move across the PIR that it can detect motion fairly well.

One trick to get around this is to mount the camera in such a way that the PIR would be slightly off to the motion. Not really sure how you do that with a tracking one unless you make it the home spot.

But I digress.

You should run this camera in 24/7 5 seconds snapshot mode.

You can adjust the interval, but 5 seconds is a good place to start.

This then uses an image compare to find motion detection, be warned though it will flashing an infrared light ever 5 seconds.

If you have other infrared cameras they will see the flash.

This is a strong pick for anyone who wants outdoor security without running power cables or paying monthly fees.

I have one. I love it. Especially motion tracking. This $107 is the same price as Prime day a couple weeks ago and is still a good deal. Solar panel (2.5W) seems to be not enough for me even though it got about 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. I like Solar energy output in the app which tells me how much the panel generated. I got about 10-12% to recharge the battery.

Here is my issue. With 10-12% energy generated from its 2.5W Solar panel, I still run about 10% deficit daily I might have to plug the camera to the usb charger once a month. Would it be solving the issue if I buy 5W panel to replace the original one? Will it give more power to charge the camera? Thanks

Tapo brand? You might have the ones I have and they do not continuous record. I might get this for that feature alone.
