I understand the shortages for memory and flash drives, but man, these prices are just unbelievable.

Wow, almost $1,000 and Apple started to solder the SSD to the motherboard.
SSDs do wear out and go bad.
There's absolutely no reason why they won't let you add RAM, for example.
It would be a shame to junk it.

Thinking of switching my wife from the Windroid ecosystem to the Apple ecosystem primarily because (1) Apple just works, and (2) I am sick of Google's privacy policy and hope Apple is better.

Her use case is basic: writing, some basic spreadsheet work, web surfing, and using AI for information retrieval. No coding or such. I'm guessing that 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD will be fine, right?

I use a Macbook Neo (8GB RAM, 512GB SSD) for what you're describing and it's everything I could possibly need. If she needs hers to be portable for any reason Neo may be worth a look.

Agreed. The neo is even capable of audio and video editing. Plenty enough for browsing and documents.

The ram is unified and isn't regular ram. There's no reason they won't let you add SSD except they think it's more profitable to force you into choosing at purchase time.

Intriguing option - thank you for bringing it up. 8 GB/512 GB Neo is priced at $800, so $130 cheaper than this Mini. If it goes on sale, it would be a compelling mobile option that replaces both an iPad and a full-blown laptop for light users.

I am going to Best Buy to check out the Apple lineup.nod

When is the last time you hear: "Oh my SSD on apple product failed so my product is junk now"....... like NEVER. A normal user will never experience this.

I can 100% tell you are not an Apple user.

I used to love Apple and have owned most of their products (including Vision Pro as an example), but they've lost the plot. I recently installed Omarchy (agentic Linux OS) on my 2015 MBP 13" with 8 GB RAM and it's now faster than my MBP M3 with 36 GB RAM running macOS. Wife's formerly Windows laptop that I also switched to Omarchy is now super fast according to her too.

I've had three MBPs. Their SSDs last roughly three years with how I use them. I've had to replace the SSD three times in the oldest one, two times in the "middle" one, and it will be impossible to replace it in my newest one (MBP M3), so it has maybe two years of life left.

Why on earth are you using that awful OS? Do not defile a Mac with that malware propaganda operating system.
