Costco's 14.2 inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip, 16GB memory, and 1TB storage is drawing attention as a strong value for everyday productivity, especially with the Pro screen, ports, and free shipping at $1,349.99. The 1TB storage and Costco's 90 day return window add appeal, and the deal is also honored in warehouse with a simple pickup flow. The main concern is RAM headroom, since 16GB can feel tight for heavy multitasking, Teams, development, or local AI work. It looks best for general use and lighter creative or coding tasks.
Shoppers who want to buy now and keep flexibility, because Costco's 90-day return window makes it easy to wait for a better Black Friday price.
Office workers and light creators who want a fast laptop with lots of storage, because 16GB handles web, documents, light Python, and sub-1080p editing well.
Developers who need a better screen and extra ports, because the Pro chassis helps when working away from a dock and avoids fanless throttling under heavier builds.
Buyers replacing an older MacBook who want a clear upgrade, because 24GB here is a meaningful step up from M1 and the 1TB SSD adds room for files and apps.
Buyers who want maximum future-proofing, because 16GB may feel lean as RAM demands rise and some prefer waiting for 24GB or 32GB.
Heavy multitaskers running lots of browser tabs plus chat apps, because 16GB can start disk swapping under that load.
Mobile app developers juggling Xcode, simulators, Android Studio, and AI tools, because that workload can feel laggy or choppy on this memory tier.
People who want headroom for local AI or large models, because 16GB is not enough for serious local LLM work.

Looking to get a new Macbook but not sure which one I need (Macbook Pro w/ 16GB ram or would having Macbook Air w/ 24GB ram be better, etc).

Do you value the nicer screen/ports of the Pro? The Air is fanless if you prefer that and aren't doing heavy calculations/encoding etc.... If you are doing those then the fan is nice to have so it doesn't throttle.

For comparison, the 13" MacBook Air with an M5 processor and 1TB storage upgrade currently retails for $1600; the 14" MacBook Pro with the newly released M6 processor (comes with 1TB storage) retails for $2000.

What do you do? Data analytics, app design, local LLMs, video encoding, multiple huge excel documents? If none of those then 16 GB would likely serve you well for the next 4+ years. I do the above less LLMs on my 16 GB M2 Pro MacBook Pro without much issue on the RAM side (huge data sets I'm throwing on a server anyways)....

I'm a Software Engineer so sometimes regular development + I also do mobile app development (Xcode, Android Studio) while also utilizing different AI tools. I would definitely want to be able to run both Xcode w/ IOS Simulator + Android Studio w/ Android Emulator + other things without it lagging, being choppy, or having issues.
Most of the dev work I've done the past several months were work-related so it was done on my work 16 inch Macbook Pro which is a pretty high spec one from 2 years ago.
