A New York Times Bestseller

A provocative manifesto that exposes the harms of helicopter parenting and sets forth an alternate philosophy for raising preteens and teens to self-sufficient young adulthood.

"Julie Lythcott-Haims is a national treasure. . . . A must-read for every parent who senses that there is a healthier and saner way to raise our children."
—Madeline Levine, author of the New York Times bestsellers The Price of Privilege and Teach Your Children Well

In How to Raise an Adult, Julie Lythcott-Haims draws on research, on conversations with admissions officers, educators, and employers, and on their own insights as a parent and as a student dean to highlight the ways in which overparenting harms children, their stressed-out parents, and society at large. While empathizing with the parental hopes and, especially, fears that lead to overhelping, Lythcott-Haims offers practical alternative strategies that underline the importance of allowing children to make their own mistаkes and develop the resilience, resourcefulness, and inner determination necessary for success.

Relevant to parents of toddlers as well as of twentysomethings-and of special value to parents of teens-this book is a rallying cry for those who wish to ensure that the next generation can take charge of their own lives with competence and confidence.

"For parents who want to foster hearty self-reliance instead of hollow self-esteem, How to Raise an Adult is the right book at the right time." -Daniel H. Pink, author of the New York Times bestsellers Drive and A Whole New Mind

Speaking as someone who works at a large university, this book should be required reading for all who are raising young people. We have parents who call to wake up their young adults every morning and parents who call professors (who aren't allowed to speak to parents of adults) about grades or missed assignments. We even have graduates who bring Mommy along to job interviews! This is not raising successful adults this is creating dependent, socially stunted full grown children.

I've heard those horror stories. (Including one where the guy brought his mom on a first-time date.) I just can't wrap my head around how kids/adults like that don't die a thousand deaths from embarrassment doing that sort of thing. Like, has no one ever teased them about cutting the umbilical cord? LGBTQ kids get harassed to the point of committing suicide; how on God's green earth do these kids get a pass?

It does make me wonder if they find it easier to talk about sex with their parents. There has to be some kind of upside to having one's self-consciousness surgically removed...

The padded cell was created for the rainbow, and no amount of padding lowered the self harm rate by their own statistics. The open talk call me daddy generation is about as dysfunctional as it gets.
