Ooma Telo Air 2 is a simple home phone replacement that stands out for reliable VoIP calling, clear voice quality, and easy use with existing cordless handsets. The service has worked well for long stretches in several setups, including Verizon FiOS and cabin use over Wi Fi, and the mobile app adds convenience for voicemail and call handling. Reported costs are usually around $6 to $9 per month in taxes and fees, with no SMS and no battery backup. A few comments also note occasional connection problems, so it is best suited to households that want a traditional landline feel over internet service.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can be very reliable over the long term, with reports of units working for 15 to 18 years and service staying clear and rarely going down. One caveat is that some units have needed power-cycling or have randomly failed to connect.

  • The service charge is $0, but taxes and fees typically run about $6-$9 per month depending on ZIP code. Premium service can add about $10 per month plus other fees.

  • It is a good, simple replacement for an old-school landline if you want a home phone setup. It is less useful if you only need cell service or Google Voice, since those can cover the same basic calling needs.

  • Yes. It relies on Wi‑Fi availability and has no battery, so it needs power to stay online. That makes it a fit for a stable home network, but not for use during outages unless you have backup power.

  • Yes. If the line does not work or does not ring, calls can still go to Ooma voicemail and callers can leave messages, which can be enough for users who mainly want message capture.

Relies on WiFi availability, no battery to charge, either with or without byo answering machine, no sms...check it once a week no dead zones , lots of use outgoing calls from the cabin. Tax an 911 not oomas fault

Got this a little over a week ago to replace a wifi tello 1 that needed to be powercycled multiple times a week, cause it kept giving no line errors. So far the new device has been working flawlessly so happy with the purchase. As for the service works great and you can even use it from your mobile device, it saved my moms house in the almost 10 years we had it a ton of money over ATT. If she didnt need the caller ID feature it would have saved us a ton more.

Yes, the bot says "$0 service charge + taxes/fees, typically $6–$9/month" depending on Zip code.

I've still got it. I'd like to upgrade the hardware, but have no desire to start paying anything....

I still have an old Obihai Obitalk OBI 202 adapter running with 2 GoogleVoice numbers which used to be a "landline" and a fax (what the heck is that???) [which cannot be setup new any longer since the service retired years ago]. So far still working though the only calls I make are the ones every 90 days to keep the GV active. ;-) With wifi calling and proper 911 setup on your cell largely obsolete.

That said, for elderly folks or people with hearing issues, the voice quality is largely better than via cell phones, at least that's what my parents say. If they have to make an important call with a doc or anything else really important, they will ditch the phone/FaceTime/WhatsApp and use their "VoIP Landline", even though technically it goes all through same the Internet. So, don't discard the use case just because you are young and grew up with smartphone.

Have been using Ooma for almost 15 years. Pay about $7 a month and it's very reliable home telephone service working with Verizon fios. I have an att 7 handset system that is probably 10 years old working with it great. We love it

Ooma is great if you want to pay $10 a month plus all the other fee for their premium service. I still have it pay a little over $8 a month with taxes in fees. Really not sure why I keep it though too be honest.

And 911 service with the Obihai service is merely $15/yr via Anveo with no additional taxes.
