Ooma Telo Air 2 is a simple home phone replacement that works well as a backup landline, especially for households that want multiple handsets and clearer voice quality than a cell phone for important calls. It can run for years with low monthly fees, and the app, voicemail notifications, and caller ID add convenience. The main tradeoffs are that it depends on Wi Fi, has no battery backup, and taxes and 911 fees still apply. Some long term setups have been rock solid, while others have had connection or reliability issues.

Common Questions (5)

  • Many units have lasted for years, with reports ranging from about 15 to 20 years of use and very few outages. A caveat is that some devices have needed power-cycling, randomly failed to connect, or eventually died after long service.

  • The basic service is typically about $7 to $9 per month plus taxes and fees, with Ooma's own estimate often landing around $6 to $9 depending on ZIP code. Some plans or bundled Premier service can run higher, around $19 total monthly.

  • Yes. It is used as a dependable landline replacement and can work with existing multi-handset cordless systems, including older Panasonic and AT&T handset setups. It is a practical fit if you want a house phone with multiple handsets spread around the home.

  • Yes. The Telo Air 2 relies on Wi‑Fi availability, so it needs an internet connection to place and receive calls. It has no battery to charge, and voicemail can still catch calls when the line does not ring.

  • Yes. Calls can go to Ooma voicemail when the phone line does not ring, and messages can be checked on the device or through the Ooma mobile app. The service also supports use from a mobile device for calling.

1-VoIP. I've been using them since June and have not had any issues, and no hidden charges.

Their cheapest is $9 a month. How is that cheaper?

Would porting this "landline number" over to a Google Voice account and then installing Google Voice on an old unlocked phone and connecting the cell phone to our Panasonic phone system via bluetooth achieve what we are trying to do? Or are there any caveats we need to consider for using Google Voice for this landline and the Panasonic system? ...
Thanks in advance for any input,
-Topper
I don't know if this will work. You could test it by connecting the cell phone with google voice to the panasonic landline phones and see if google voice will ring through. You could do that before porting over your current landline number to google voice.

Those calling it dumb because you could get a cell phone instead are probably too young to remember having a community phone in the house. This gives us a house line with multiple handsets spread around the house/floors. Have used it plenty of times when the kids aren't answering their cell phones because they're charging or left in the car or whatever. Ring the house. Someone will pick up. Cheap backup, even if you pay the $7/month fees. That line used to be at least $30 when AT&T provided it.

My Ooma Telo hardware finally died last year after running since ~2008. It served its purpose well for the first several years. I switched to exclusively using my cell phone and am glad to be rid of Ooma's rising fees.

are they still charging like $7+ monthly on 911 service and communicatiom fee and tax?
I left them like five years ago because their "just pay fees" bill was up to like $14.00 a month after starting at just $4.xx/mo back in 2013. They said they could get that down to $0.00 for x amount of months to try to retain me, but I was just done with them at that point.

Here. Bought the system ($150, I think) from Costco in 2008, barely picking up though because most of the calls are from marketing.
