That said, for elderly folks or people with hearing issues, the voice quality is largely better than via cell phones, at least that's what my parents say. If they have to make an important call with a doc or anything else really important, they will ditch the phone/FaceTime/WhatsApp and use their "VoIP Landline", even though technically it goes all through same the Internet. So, don't discard the use case just because you are young and grew up with smartphone.

Ooma Telo Air 2 is a simple home phone replacement that works well for landline-style calling over Wi Fi, with clear voice quality, voicemail alerts on the phone app, and support for multiple handsets and intercom use. It has been reliable for long stretches in several setups, including Verizon FiOS and cabin use, and it can be a useful backup for families or older relatives who prefer a house line. The main tradeoff is ongoing fees and taxes, often around $7 to $10 a month, plus porting charges. It also depends on Wi Fi and does not include SMS, so it fits best when you want a basic cordless home line.
Common Questions (5)
Basic Ooma service is about $7.xx to $9.99 per month before taxes and fees, and the total commonly lands around $19/month depending on the plan and ZIP code. Ooma also advertises $0 service charge plus taxes/fees, typically $6-$9/month in some areas.
It can be a dependable landline replacement, with long-term users reporting years of service, clear calls, and few outages. It also works with existing cordless handset systems and can be useful for households that want multiple handsets, intercom use, or a backup line.
Yes, but the number usually has to be ported from Ooma to a mobile carrier first, then from that carrier to Google Voice. The process can take a few business days for the first hop and 24-48 hours for the Google Voice port, and Ooma should not be canceled until everything is finished.
It does not support SMS, but it can be used from a mobile device through the Ooma app. Voicemail notifications can also appear on a cell phone, and messages can be listened to in the app or on the device.
It relies on Wi‑Fi availability and has no battery to charge, so it depends on your internet connection for service. It can still be a practical home line for outgoing calls and can work reliably in places like a cabin if the Wi‑Fi is stable.

Would porting this "landline number" over to a Google Voice account and then installing Google Voice on an old unlocked phone and connecting the cell phone to our Panasonic phone system via bluetooth achieve what we are trying to do? Or are there any caveats we need to consider for using Google Voice for this landline and the Panasonic system? ...
Thanks in advance for any input,
