That said, for elderly folks or people with hearing issues, the voice quality is largely better than via cell phones, at least that's what my parents say. If they have to make an important call with a doc or anything else really important, they will ditch the phone/FaceTime/WhatsApp and use their "VoIP Landline", even though technically it goes all through same the Internet. So, don't discard the use case just because you are young and grew up with smartphone.

Ooma Telo Air 2 is a Wi Fi based home phone setup that works best as a simple landline replacement with cordless handsets, multiple phones around the house, and decent call quality. The service is described as reliable for long stretches, with clear audio, voicemail alerts on the app, and useful backup calling when cell phones are charging or missing. It can also be handy for households that want a shared house line or for older users who prefer landline style voice quality. The main catch is the ongoing fees, which typically run about $7 to $9 a month plus taxes and 911 charges, and the device depends on Wi Fi with no SMS support.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. The basic plan is typically about $7 to $9 per month after taxes and fees, depending on ZIP code, and Premier can run about $19 per month total. The advertised $0 service charge does not include the required regulatory and tax charges.
It relies on Wi‑Fi availability and has no battery to charge, so it will not work during an internet outage unless you have backup power/network gear. When the connection is stable, it can work well for outgoing calls and home use.
Yes. Porting a number into Ooma costs about $40, and porting out is free. If you want to keep an old landline number, Ooma can be used as a traditional home-line replacement for that number.
It is a solid fit if you want a simple house phone with multiple handsets, intercom, and a backup line for family members who miss cell calls. It is less useful if you only need a cell phone or Google Voice, since the main value is a traditional landline-style setup.
Yes. It can work with older multi-handset systems, including AT&T and Panasonic-style home phone setups, as long as the base is connected properly. One setup also used the Ooma app for voicemail notifications and message playback.

I am also in the same boat - we have an old landline (currently using Spectrum VoIP service) that we are looking to "port out" to appropriate service - i.e. either Ooma or inexpensive MVNO service OR Google Voice. We rarely make outgoing calls and it is mainly for incoming calls from companies we had shared the number with BEFORE cell phones were a thing - the landline number has been replaced with our cell phone numbers at most companies but seems like there's always one or two companies (or old friends) that still seem to have our landline number.
Anyway, for that reason we are looking to keep the number that's been in the family for over 30 years and looking for best and most inexpensive option for the occasional incoming call.
Curious how Google Voice could be used in this scenario? We have a Panasonic multi-unit "landline" phone system that is currently connected to the Spectrum VoIP gateway/modem. This Panasonic unit also has a feature to connect via bluetooth to a cell phone.
Would porting this "landline number" over to a Google Voice account and then installing Google Voice on an old unlocked phone and connecting the cell phone to our Panasonic phone system via bluetooth achieve what we are trying to do? Or are there any caveats we need to consider for using Google Voice for this landline and the Panasonic system? Edit: On bit further research, looks like to port the landline number to Google Voice, we might have to temporarily port over from Spectrum to an intermediary cell phone/MVNO before finally porting over from the cell phone to Google Voice? Still trying to sort the steps out.
Thanks in advance for any input,

If you're looking to port out of ooma or any landline to Gv here are the steps I followed
Ooma to Google Voice requires porting to a mobile carrier like Tello first. Do not cancel your Ooma service until everything is finished.
Step 0: create a Gmail account you can share with whoever needs access to your landline number like your spouse or children. Sign up for Gv https://voice.google.co
Step 1: Ooma to Tello (Takes 2-5 business days). You need an unlocked phone for this step.
• Account # is usually 1 followed by your 10-digit number (e.g., 15551234567).
• PIN is often 0000 or your Ooma account security PIN. Call 1-866-939-6662 to verify. Ooma will say there is no PIN and to leave it blank, but Tello required a PIN so I used 0000. It worked.
• Service address is your billing address.
• Sign up for Tello, select a cheap plan, and submit a "port-in" request using these details.
• Wait until the Ooma line goes dead and your Tello SIM is fully active.
Step 2: Tello to Google Voice (Takes 24-48 hours)
• Log into Tello, go to your dashboard, and find your Account Number and Port-Out PIN.
• Open Google Voice, go to Settings > Change/Port, and choose "Port your mobile number".
• Enter your Tello details and pay the one-time $20 Google fee.
Final step is to cancel ooma service by calling Telo Customer Support: 888-711-6662
Gv will ring any phone/tablet/pc you have the app installed and you're signed into. It'll work on any mobile -- locked or unlocked, with or without a voice line, as long as it has WiFi or data plan. I main a Gv number and I only have a data plan, no minutes or text. It will work in parallel with your existing mobile line. You can configure it to use either carrier or data.
