Ooma Telo Air 2 is a simple home phone replacement that works well as a backup landline, especially for households that want multiple handsets and a familiar house phone setup. The service is described as reliable for long stretches, with clear calls, voicemail access through the device or app, and compatibility with existing cordless systems. It also appeals to people who want a low monthly bill, often around $7 to $9 plus taxes and fees. The main caveats are Wi Fi dependence, no battery backup, and occasional connection or pricing complaints. A practical fit if you want a traditional landline feel without the old phone bill.

  • The hardware can last for many years, with reports of about 15 to 18 years of reliable home telephone service.

  • The service can work flawlessly after replacing a Wi‑Fi Telo 1 that previously required frequent power-cycling for no line errors.

  • The system can provide clear voice quality and voicemail notifications through the Ooma app even when the hub message light stops working.

  • The service can be used from a mobile device and can support caller ID features that may reduce costs versus a cell carrier over time.

  • The system can stop working after long use, and some users choose not to replace it due to spam call volume and the need for a POTS setup.

  • The service relies on Wi‑Fi availability and can lack SMS support, which may limit functionality during connectivity problems.

  • The device can randomly fail to connect, which can interrupt the ability to place or receive calls.

  • The monthly cost can rise beyond a simple $0 service charge, with reports of bundled Premier pricing totaling about $19 per month after taxes and fees.

1-VoIP. I've been using them since June and have not had any issues, and no hidden charges.

Their cheapest is $9 a month. How is that cheaper?

Would porting this "landline number" over to a Google Voice account and then installing Google Voice on an old unlocked phone and connecting the cell phone to our Panasonic phone system via bluetooth achieve what we are trying to do? Or are there any caveats we need to consider for using Google Voice for this landline and the Panasonic system? ...
Thanks in advance for any input,
-Topper
I don't know if this will work. You could test it by connecting the cell phone with google voice to the panasonic landline phones and see if google voice will ring through. You could do that before porting over your current landline number to google voice.

Those calling it dumb because you could get a cell phone instead are probably too young to remember having a community phone in the house. This gives us a house line with multiple handsets spread around the house/floors. Have used it plenty of times when the kids aren't answering their cell phones because they're charging or left in the car or whatever. Ring the house. Someone will pick up. Cheap backup, even if you pay the $7/month fees. That line used to be at least $30 when AT&T provided it.

My Ooma Telo hardware finally died last year after running since ~2008. It served its purpose well for the first several years. I switched to exclusively using my cell phone and am glad to be rid of Ooma's rising fees.

are they still charging like $7+ monthly on 911 service and communicatiom fee and tax?
I left them like five years ago because their "just pay fees" bill was up to like $14.00 a month after starting at just $4.xx/mo back in 2013. They said they could get that down to $0.00 for x amount of months to try to retain me, but I was just done with them at that point.

Here. Bought the system ($150, I think) from Costco in 2008, barely picking up though because most of the calls are from marketing.

Sorry, if you want a home phone this is an excellent choice and I would recommend. The rising fees comment is pretty funny in context!
